The Cheaters : (1929/30)( Visual )

7 editions published between 1929 and 2011 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Cheaters, a 'society' melodrama, was the third of four features produced by the McDonagh sisters in the late silent era of Australian filmmaking. The plot concerns an embezzler, a tragic rather than evil figure, who swears vengeance on a businessman who put him into jail for twenty years. His daughter is used as bait but falls in love with the businessman's son. Often redolent of German expressionist cinema, with a Mabuse-like crime empire pervading the entire society, The Cheaters displays an unusual awareness of the expressive range of the camera and scenario construction. Marie Lorraine was a stage name for Isabel McDonagh
