Total and partial hydrogenation of aromatic compounds still receives an increasing interest for industrials, especially with the conversion of benzene into cyclohexane or cyclohexene. Nanoparticles generally possess good activities and selectivities for hydrogenation reactions in aqueous and organic media. Relevant results of their use in ionic liquids for catalytic applications have recently been described. To improve the stability of such colloidal suspensions in non-usual solvents, our work has been devoted to the use of ligands as protective agents of nanoparticles for catalytic hydrogenations of olefinic and aromatic compounds. A reduction method for the synthesis of rhodium nanoparticles stabilized by various ligands in ionic liquids has been developed. Polynitrogenated compounds and more particularly 2,2'-bipyridine have proved to be the most interesting stabilizing agents. Colloidal 2,2'-bipyridine-stabilized rhodium(0) suspensions are stable and active for catalytic hydrogenation of olefinic and aromatic compounds according to the experimental conditions (pressure and temperature) 2H2h
