This work aims at controlling the deposition process of silicon oxynitride thin films by reactivesputtering from a silicon target. It is also focused on some correlations between structural andoptical properties of the films in order to produce antireflective multilayers. SiNy and SiOx films aresputter deposited by three different reactive processes. A continuous reactive gas injection(conventional process: CP) or a periodical supply by means of exponential pulses is implemented(RGPP process). The third process is based on a controlled orientation of the substrate (GLADtechnique). These films are analyzed by electronic spectroscopy and electronic microscopy forcomposition and morphology, respectively. The optical properties are determined by UV-Vis-IRspectroscopy. Moreover, theoretical simulations on structural silicon nitride and oxide areperformed so as to better understand optical properties of the films. Last but not least, this workleads to the growth and study of SiNy/SiOx antireflective multilayers used in the visible range anddeposited on different kind of substrates

Over the last two decades, the considerable development of submicron-scale technologies, supportedby the advent of new experimental, numerical or theoretical methods, has allowed the study ofpreviously inaccessible domains. The improvement of these areas of research now allow to work atthe atomic-scale. At this scale, the strong confinement of particles generates some specificinteractions between the different atoms in the system which can in certain cases generates somenew physical applications. It is then very difficult to predict the behavior of the systems and even theinteractions appearing at first glance as the simplest can generate unexpected and unknownbehaviors. The control of the experimental devices and the interpretation of their results can be veryhard, and the use of numerical methods, to support or guide of the experiments, has becomenecessary. Indeed, the improvement of computer and numerical methods can now allow studying andanalyzing system at the atomic scale. The PhD work presented in this thesis has therefore focused onthe development of new nanotechnologies by studying 3 cases of nanoconfinements of increasingcomplexity. For this, molecular dynamics and quantum simulations were conducted. The first workreported here relates to a very simple form of confinement since it studies the transition of ionsthrough a nanofluidic device made of carbon nanotubes. The experimental observation of an activatedbehavior in the current/voltage characteristic was fully interpreted using Molecular dynamicssimulations carried out on carbon nanotubes with the same geometry than experimental ones. Afternumerically reproducing the current-activated behavior, we have proven that the activated curveswere due to a subtle competition between the distribution of water and ions in the nanotube as well asthe bulk, but also were due to the influence of the surface charge distribution on the nanotube wall.The encapsulation of an anticancer molecule in a boron nitride nanotube in order to create new drugvectors was then studied. Calculations using molecular dynamics and DFT allowed a detailed analysisof the encapsulation of the molecule on the inner and outer walls of the BNNT depending of its radius.These results have also been compared with similar simulations carried out on carbon nanotubes. Therelease of the anticancer molecule was also proven to be possible near the targeted membrane cell.Finally, the third work investigates an even more complex form of confinement: the translocation ofDNA strands in the channel of an alpha-hemolysin protein confined in a nanopore in order to createnew DNA sequencers. The geometrical conditions of stabilization of the protein were first investigatedin a synthetic membrane which mimics the biological media of the protein. Then the current variationsgenerated by the diffusion of adenine and cytosine in the channel were measured using all-atommolecular dynamics simulations and well compared to the corresponding experimental data. Thestrong agreement between experiments and simulations opens some large and interestingperspectives for the development of new biomimetic applications
Cobalt porphyrins on coinage metal surfaces - adsorption and template properties by Torsten Houwaart( )

This thesis is a theoretical study on the cobalt porphyrin - coinage metal surface interface with the DFT code VASP. The necessary DFT framework has been introduced in chapter 1. The structure of the Java program jBardeen for STM simulation is explained in chapter 2 and the source code is attached as Appendix. A study of the adsorption of CoTPP on coinage metal surfaces has been undertaken in chapter 3. Different parameters of the calculation have been evaluated: the adsorption site and the geometry of both the molecule and surface have been investigated with respect to the xc-functional and dispersion correction used. A most stable adsorption site -bridge down- is identified. Consequently, this most stable site was investigated for its electronic structure. Calculated STM images with the jBardeen code were compared with an experiment of CoTPP on a Cu(111) surface with sub monolayer coverage. In chapter 4 an Fe adatom was introduced to the CoTPP on Ag(111) system. Three symmetrically different binding sites for the Fe atom were identified on the macrocycle, labelled the bi-, brd- and bru-positions for bisector, bridge down and bridge up respectively. A magnetic moment could be evidenced which was mainly located on the Fe atom. Possible pathways between the four symmetrically equivalent bisector sites were investigated with different methods. Single point calculations in vacuum and Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) of the whole system revealed a barrier height of slightly above 0.2 eV going from bi- to the brd-position. A vibrational analysis showed that switching of the Fe atom is likely, when perturbed out of equilibrium in the brd- and bru- positions
