La lecture numérique by Thierry Baccino( )

5 editions published in 2015 in French and held by 762 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

6 editions published in 1991 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

READING A TEXT ON A SCREEN POSES THE ESSENTIAL PROBLEM OF THE SPATIAL INFORMATION OF WORDS. IN A SERIE OF FIVE EXPERIMENTS OF THE USING TWO PARADIGMS (DECISION TIMES AND MANUAL AIMING), WE HAVE SHOWN THAT THE READER BUILDS A SPATIAL REPRESENTATION OF WORDS AND THAT THIS REPRESENTATION IS RELATED TO THE RECALL OF ITS REFERENT IN THE CORRESPONDING DISCOURSE MODEL

4 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work relies on the question of existence of two kinds of visual named ambient and focal. Document begins to present previous work at behavioral, physiological, oculometric and computational levels. Next, we expose our experimental approach and the obtained results. All experimental methodologies rely on oculomotor data with the aim to study ambient and focal aspects. We approach this problem in suggesting an automatic method to discriminate the two kinds of fixations contrary to previous studies. In a first step, this fixation clustering allows to reveal one relevant behavioral index to discriminate fixations. In a subsequent step, we observe that two kinds of fixations show distinct features on the spatial deployment in the visual scene. In a next step, we investigate the respective role of ambient and focal fixations in the perception across two different paradigms. Hypothesis suggesting focal fixations are specialized in a local perception of object and ambient fixations preferentially treat the global scene are validated. In a next step, we try to consider ambient and focal fixations to increase the ability of a saliency model to predict spatial deployment of fixations. The last step suggests a functional temporal synthesis and a global schema of ocular behavior

4 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The convergent telecommunication services are expanding significantly since the 2000's on the mass market. The user is confronted with new, increasingly sophisticated, services. In this study, we defend the hypothesis that it is possible to have a complex convergent telecommunication service with a simple usability. That is what we call the simplexity. The first part is dedicated to the theoretical study of the convergent telecommunication services and their complexity. We have established two main characteristics of these services: they are developed on several types of devices (Computers, Mobilephones, Televisions, etc.) and they merged more and more features previously separated (Email, SMS, Phone call, File sharing, etc.). We studied the impact of their complexity on the difficulty and the complication of their usage. We have extracted from literature the potential sources of this complexity. In particular, two characteristics have been kept to study the simplexity of these services: mental models and homogeneity. The second part of this thesis presents three experiments that we created in order to test the validity of our hypothesis. The first experiment studies the user's mental models. We want to determine which of them would be the most suitable to maintain complexity and a simple usage. The goal of the second experiment is to determine the degree of homogeneity needed to obtain a complex service with a simple usage. The last is an exploratory experiment in this field

L'expertise en lecture musicale : intégration intermodale by Véronique Drai-Zerbib( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2009 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The main aim of this thesis is to determine the contribution of conceptual non analogical schemata to the expositive text understanding processes, according to the reader's level of expertise in a given field of knowledge. The result interpretations being based on the Kintsch Construction-Integration model (1988, 1998), as well as on Long-term working memory by Ericsson and Kintsch (1995). Our experimental corpus has many goals. First of all, we want to highlight differentiated reading strategies by means of the occulometric technique (Rayner, 1998 ; Baccino, 2004 ; Colombi, Closson, Strahm & Baccino, 2006 ; Strahm, Kicka, & Baccino, 2008) when it comes to understanding schematized expositive texts and that, according to various factors: the reader's expertise in a given field of knowledge, the presence or absence of the schema (experiments 1 and 2b, Strahm & Baccino, 2006), the cognitive level solicited by the task (experiments 2a, 2b, 3a and 3b), the redundancy or the complementarity of the schema to the text, as well as the simultaneousness or sequential displaying of the modalities (experiments 3a and 3b). Furthermore, we study the reader's capacities to produce a conceptual schema depending on these different factors (experiment 4). Then, through post testing, we determine the impact of the manipulation of some factors in these six experiments on the long term memorization. Lastly, we present two extensions of the Kintsch model (1998) relative to the understanding of an expositive text with one redundant conceptual non analogical schema according to the displaying type of the modalities, simultaneous versus sequential

2 editions published in 2004 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this thesis is the study of the strategies taking place during the interaction with hypertexts, in particular when the subjects carry out tasks of information search. The specific characteristics of these electronic media and the difficulties of interaction which they pose to the users are discussed, as well as the characteristics of the hypertext links, which are the main system of navigation among the pages of the network. Various types of strategies are defined: strategies of visual exploration, strategies of action (selection of the hypertext links ) and strategies of navigation inside each network. They were studied during five experiments via the use of the eye movement recording. This technique making it possible to study in real time the cognitive processes implied in the tasks of information search and to identify the various adopted strategies

2 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2004 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2001 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2016 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is easier today to offer in one informative document many sources of information presented in different formats. Presenting various media can bring benefits in terms of learning performance, but dealing effectively with these different sources of information is complex. Therefore, offering documents guiding the learner when he is reading may be necessary to promote the construction of a qualitative mental model. Empirical studies that are conducted during this thesis endeavour to determine which formats are most effective while gradually increasing guidance within the document. Thus, four items are tested: the position of the picture relative to the text, the effect of the instructions, the text segmentation and the introduction of a guidance through a figure-ground contrast. Moreover, in order to bring new elements of reflection about how people explore an informative document and the impact of these strategies on performance, the eye movements of the learners were recorded. The results showed that changes in the format of information have an impact on the strategies of consultation of the document, including the increasing eye transitions between texts and illustrations. However, only the segmentation of the text in the form of semantic paragraphs brought benefits in terms of understanding

2 editions published in 2001 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The main goal of this thesis was to better understand how the familiarity or the visual and semantic features of words can guide the gaze, and then be used to identify the target word and reject distractors during visual search. The general hypothesis was that both the word recognition and attention guidance mechanisms are determined by high level target representations, whose influence depends on the content of the working memory (i.e. the template) on one hand, and on the way the target word is defined (i.e. the nature of the research task) on the other hand. Response times, eye movements and/or event-related potentials were recorded during various visual search tasks for words and phrases, while the familiarity and the visual and semantic similarity of words with the target word were manipulated. The combination of these different methods demonstrated first that both the visual features of words can be extracted from parafoveal vision and used to guide participants' attention and gaze, and then determine the foveal word recognition mechanism. Moreover, the respective impacts of familiarity and of word features depended both on the nature of the search task and on the level of the associated cognitive load. The results are discussed in relation with the visual search and visual word recognition literature. Finally, fundamental and applied perspectives for future research are proposed
