Laserdisc version with chapter headings of a drama of salvation and grace adapted from Bernanos's novel - the diary of a young priest in a poor country parish assailed by self doubt and illness. Bresson miraculously makes this film his own while adhering closely to the novel. Bresson retains the narration from the novel but he brings a special cinematic quality to its literariness - the priest tells us something at the same time as we watch it happen. This form of doubling and the use of off-screen sound gives the film a heightened, spiritual quality unique to Bresson
