Nicomachean Ethics is the name normally given to the most well-known work by Aristotle on virtue and moral character. It plays a prominent role in defining Aristotelian ethics. It consists of ten books based on notes said to be from his lectures at the Lyceum which were either edited by or dedicated to Aristotle's son, Nicomachus. In many ways this work parallels the similar Eudemian Ethics, which has only eight books, and the two works can be fruitfully compared. Aristotle states in the opening chapter that eudaimonia, often translated as well-being or happiness, is the highest goal of all human deliberate actions, and coincident with the aim of Politics, the subject of another closely related work of Aristotle. He takes this as a starting point, going on to describe what is necessary to be happy. --Back cover

Unfortunately almost all of Aristotle's original works have been lost yet his ideas and philosophy were so widely known throughout the world that we still have many of these great volumes of knowledge. The Roman writer Cicero viewed Aristotle's work so highly that he labelled them as a "River of Gold". In this book Aristotle studies the animal kingdom in all its forms such as their behavior, instincts, activities and nature. Over 500 animals are researched in this book

The Clarendon Aristotle Series is designed for both students and professionals. It provides accurate translations of selected Aristotelian texts, accompanied by incisive commentaries that focus on philosophical problems and issues, The volumes in the series have been widely welcomed and favourably reviewed. Important new titles are being added to the series, and a number of well-established volumes are being reissued with revisions and/or supplementary material. Christopher Shields presents a new translation and commentary of Aristotle's De Anima, a work of interest to philosophers at all levels, as well as psychologists and students interested in the nature of life and living systems. The volume provides a full translation of the complete work, together with a comprehensive commentary. While sensitive to philological and textual matters, the commentary addresses itself to the philosophical reader who wishes to understand and assess Aristotle's accounts of the soul and body; perception; thinking; action; and the character of living systems. It aims to present controversial aspects of the text in a neutral, fair-minded manner, so that readers can come to be equipped to form their own judgments. This volume includes the crucial first book, which the original translation in the Clarendon Aristotle Series omitted. A complete English edition of one of the most influential of all philosophical works ; Clear and accurate translation ; A substantial philosophical commentary guides the reader through the work ; A comprehensive introduction Aristotle's theories within their intellectual and historical context.--Publisher website

A touchstone in Western debates about society and government, the Politics is Aristotle's classic work on the nature of political community. Here, he discusses the merits and defects of various regimes or ways of organizing political community - democracy in particular - and in the process examines such subjects as slavery, economics, the family, citizenship, justice, and revolution
