The forest resource in Atlantic Canada provides jobs and income for many residents. Sustainable management of this resource will ensure these benefits continue. This paper briefly describes Atlantic Canada's forest resource in terms of productive forest land, inventory of wood volume, age class of trees, and land ownership. Wood production is reviewed by comparing recent annual harvest volumes to annual allowable cuts. Issues that may have an impact on future wood production are also discussed

This note compares four silvicultural strategies on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) woodlot, where a study was initiated in 1946 to determine the long-term wood volume yields from a clear-cut, a clear-cut with pre-commercial thinning, a selection harvest, and a do-nothing control site. Data were recorded for 43 years until 1989. The note contains a financial analysis for the four treatments, using only costs associated with thinning and revenues in the form of stumpage. The results indicate which treatment produced the highest total value

This paper uses a logit model to predict the likelihood of a landowner engaging in forest management based on his or her characteristics. Information from a 1990 survey conducted by one of the New Brunswick forest products marketing boards, the Carleton-Victoria Wood Producers Association, was used in the analysis. The original 17-variable model was reduced to five variables that had the same degree of accuracy as the original 17-variable model. Compared to a similar province-wide analysis, this study indicates that regional differences exist when it comes to the type of owner likely to engage in management
