A SAMPLE OF 700 SKELETONS EXHUMED FROM SIX ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES OF THE NORD-PICARDIE REGION WAS STUDIED. THE PRESENT STUDY INCLUDES PALEODEMOGRAPHIC, MORPHOLOGICAL AND PALEOPATHOLOGICAL ANALYSES. TWO PHASES OF SUBSISTENCE STRESS AND DEMOGRAPHIC DECLINE (LATE 5TH C. AD AND LATE 6TH C.AD), AND MORPHOLOGICAL STABILITY IN THE HAUTESCAUT AREA HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED. OUR FINDINGS INDICATE THAT "SAXON" PEOPLE SETTLED ON THE CHANNEL COAST AS EARLY AS 375 AD, WHEREAS A NON-HOMOGENEOUS GERMAN-TYPE GROUP HAD SETTLED AND DISPERSED IN THE ESCAUT VALLEY IN LATE 5TH CENTURY AD. WE REPORT THE EXISTENCE OF VIOLENCE AND SURGICAL MANIPULATION IN THESE POPULATIONS. THEY ALSO MIGHT HAVE HAD ENDEMIC TUBERCULOSIS AND LEPROSY. THE METHODOLOGY OF INVESTIGATION APPLIED IN THE PRESENT STUDY SHOULD AID IN BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE DARK AGES HISTORY THAT HAS SO FAR BEEN INCOMPLETE AND BIASED
