A novel, simplified approach to particle transport in slabs is given. The number of particles transmitted and reflected by a slab of finite thickness is obtained as a function of the number of collisions the particles receive. This 'orders-of-scattering' solution is facilitated by an invariant imbedding approach which leads to a set of integral recursion relations between transmitted and reflected particle currents. Solutions are given for both one-dimensional and three-dimensional transport in slabs for an arbitrary anisotropic scattering law

This document is a report of the technical progress made during the period 10 Aug. 1999 - 31 July 2000 in the areas of: (1) research and evaluation of particle transport simulation programs for modeling the detection and measurement of space radiation by space-borne sensors; (2) construction of realistic flight sensor computer models; (3) performance of particle transport calculations; (4) analysis of transport simulation results, including single particle tracking; (5) transfer and facilitation in the implementation of particle transport simulation technology to AFRL. Several computer programs (LAHET, ACCEPT, CYLTRAN, MCNPX) for particle transport simulation were applied to the modeling of the CEASE and HEP sensors. In addition, a preliminary version of a post-processor program for analysis of single particle histories from MCNPX was written. Shown in this report are several listings of input files, with geometry/materials drawings, for the various simulation programs, an example of (excerpt from) a track file analysis, and partial listings of code outputs

This report will describe the development and application of numerical methods for predicting dose and variation in multi-layered structures due to x-rays and gamma rays and the charge build-up in dielectrics due to electron beam irradiation. The scope our work included: development and implementation of: 1) discrete ordinates electron transport calculations for electron sources both within and incident of solid structures; 2) discrete ordinates electron transport calculations for photon sources incident on layered solids; 3) Monte Carlo calculations and statistical analysis programs for low-energy electron transport in insulating structures. In addition, several photon transport calculations were made to determine the scattered photon energy spectra characteristic of various standard irradiation test facilities. Calculations were performed by the Monte Carlo method to determine the dose at various positions behind parallel barriers (circular or rectangular). Also, calculations were made for a blockhouse geometry. The results were obtained for a 1.25 MeV plane monodirectional source incident on 20.5, 41.0, and 61.5 psf of iron. Comparisons were made with roof reduction factors obtained by Spencer and with experiments performed at the contractor's laboratory

A proton scattering process resulted in damage to one of the Chandra X-ray telescope's focal plane detectors. In this process, incident protons were transmitted, by scattering off the telescope mirrors, to the focal plane. We identify the proton population responsible for the damage and, using a proper grazing angle formalism, we show that the standard calculations of grazing angle scattering will significantly under predict the expected proton flux at the focal plane
