This volume is an attempt to encourage academic librarians to use media as well as books in their libraries. It is composed of three papers, two by educators and one by a computer-oriented librarian. Dr. Ralph W. Tyler, former director of the Center of Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California, discusses the changed educational scene and the relevance of present methods of student selection, curriculum, teaching and the educational bureaucracy. Dr. James W. Brown, dean of Graduate Studies and Research, San Jose State College, calls for a multipurpose academic library which actively concerns itself with knowledge finding, manipulation, assessment, and use in instruction. Professor Kent, director of the University of Pittsburgh's Office of Communication Services, dreams of a library future encompassing the use of new devices, techniques, and materials for user service. A library program for Columbia by Clarence Walter Stone( Book )

11 editions published between 1965 and 1966 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Part of the planning necessary for the new city of Columbia, Maryland (projected population of 125,000) has been the organization of an optimum program of information services for all areas of its life--both for the community in general and for its schools, industries, and businesses. Communications, technology and related systems have been investigated and a general plan making extensive use of community antenna television systems, closed circuit television, shared computer services, and other programs, all administered by the Columbia communications service agency, has been proposed. Village libraries, which are to be placed in population areas of approximately 3000 families, will have the dual purpose of serving the junior and senior high schools, and being a branch of the public library. On the other hand, the town center library may become the focal center for all library and communications services for the town. The communications agency will be responsible, under contract, for all basic library services for both the village and town center libraries, and for the school and academic libraries, including central processing, administration of paperback sales, provision for audiovisual materials, and administration of a central scientific-technical reference center. Developmental book activities and needs in the Republic of Vietnam by Stanley A Barnett( Book )

1 edition published in 1966 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A three week survey was conducted to: (1) investigate the state of developmental book activity in Vietnam, (2) determine the priority of Vietnam's book needs, (3) develop program recommendations to meet the needs and (4) formulate regional recommendations. Although books published in Vietnam increased from 667 in 1961 to 1,566 in 1965, normal growth and expansion of the developmental book field must await the cessation of hostilities and the emergence of more modern schools. Recommendations on materials and methods needed are: (1) textbook guides for elementary school teachers, (2) seminars and workshops demonstrating the role of textbooks, (3) textbooks for elementary and secondary students, (4) mature easy-to-read books for non-school youth, (5) translations of U.S. pedagogical materials and (6) production of audio-visual materials. Recommendations concerning library and library book development are: (1) unification of the National Library and the General Library, (2) establishment and enforcement of school library standards, (3) development of pilot demonstration programs, (4) establishment of study study centers and (5) formulation of an effective library association. A study of regional instructional media resources : phase I-manpower by Ann M Martin( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A comprehensive study of instructional media manpower requirements and related professional education problems was conducted. The specific objectives were (1) to establish a job classification system for media services, (2) to suggest dimensions for future studies of manpower requirements for media services, (3) to spell out procedures for other similar studies, and (4) to suggest data which could be gathered to contribute toward the development of educational objectives, curriculum, and training materials for persons working in any of the media field specialities. Procedures included combining the technIQues of functional job analysis and the critical incident technIQue to provide (1) quantitative indicators for grouping media jobs according to areas of performance or capability, interests, and satisfactions and (2) some qualitative dimensions for classifying educational requirements for the occupational groups derived. A computer-based multivariate statistical analyzer system was adopted for "finding" the relevant occupational groups and relevant variables. The multidimensional performance space obtained provides a way of viewing the changes taking place in jobs. Findings revealed--(1) as more technological changes occur in instructional services to schools and colleges, the relationship between occupations in discrete work fields is expected to diminish, (2) that several different jobs exist to accomplish the same functional tasks, and (3) a whole new range of jobs, each associated with particular skills and knowledges has been identified -- educational technicians, educational specialists, educational communications specialists, and educational managers.
