Malalay's sisters : women's public visibility in 'post-war / reconstruction' Afghanistan by Julie Billaud( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis investigates the modalities and conditions of Afghan women's reappearance in the public domain following the downfall of the Taliban regime. Based on a twelve-month ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2007 among different groups of women (women MPs, women's rights activists, female University Students) mostly based in Kabul, l study women's responses to various social anxieties that have emerged as a consequence of this new visibility. l argue that while the current 'reconstruction' project has opened new possibilities for women and created new imaginaries pertaining to their role in society, the ideological framework (i.e liberal notions of equality and human rights etc.) on which it is grounded together with the strong military presence of foreign troops, have fuelled tensions at different levels of the Afghan society. Pressurized by their community to remain faithful to their 'culture', 'religion' and 'tradition' on one hand, and encouraged to access the public and become 'visible' by global forces on the other hand, women have been left with little choice but to adapt and find alternative ways to preserve a sense of autonomy. I describe these tactics as 'oppositional practices of everyday life' (De Certeau 1984), i.e complex practices of dissimulation which under the necessary appearance of compliance and conformity allow women to reconfigure social norms and create new spaces for themselves. More generally, this work engages with issues such as nationalism, Islam, gender, veiling, modernity, agency, rights and the public sphere

2 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in French and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research tries to reconstruct in the light of several field surveys and from different points of view, how the practice of painting - in relation to a prestigious ancestral legacy - has evolved in Iran in the 20th century. The study begins in 1911, when the first School of Fine Arts was created in the country, and ends in 2009, the year of the inauguration of the First International Fadjr Festival of Plastic Arts. In that period of time, the different cultural policies that have guided the development of pictorial art, the major institutions orchestrating artistic education, the successive circles of painters that gave life to varied aesthetic trends, are presented. The history of the pictorial movements developed during this period is coupled with a study of the socio-political organisation of the art worlds. This recollection of the recent pictorial history provides an opportunity to analyse, based on the discourse of nineteen artists interviewed in Tehran in 2008 and 2009, the representations that these creators have nurtured of the State, the art and their role in the society. This also allows to question the adaptation of artistic modernity in the country. Finally, it contributes to consider the implications of the socio-political issues raised by visual arts, especially painting, in contemporary Iran
La parentalité désemparée : séparations conjugales et militantisme paternel (1970-2007) by Damien Lecarpentier( Book )

2 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research contributes to the study of militant fathers groups, and of the controversies surrounding the organisation of post-separation parenthood, since the 1970s. The notion of "parenthood adrift" is proposed and deployed here in order, firstly, to signify the weakening of the usual reference points for the normative foundation and practical organisation of parenthood, which has freed itself from its traditional "anchor" of the conjugal relation; and, secondly, on a more individual level, to de scribe the manner in which certain parents can come to feel disoriented when confronted with the need to reorganise parental links following the breakup of a relationship, and to submit this reorganisation to the judgment of the courts. In this work, fathers movements are analysed as illustrative of the different paths that parental disappointments and demands can take following conjugal separation, and as sites for the discussion and for the reconfiguration of individual expenences

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With a clear reference to long term Braudelian historical perspectives, that dissertation aims at an approach of ancient societies' economic history that is as dynamic as it is usually considered for modem societies. With a complete disregard for the classic primitivism -modernism controversy, it is analysing the progressive emergence of a political economy of the Roman State. A contribution-based system is replacing the predatory step at a scale in geographical, complexity and legislative terms never reached before and not to be met again before Modem Times. Getting a share of the fiscal surplus became the main factor behind the conflicts opposing the different ruling classes of Imperial Rome. It is thus essential to examine the interactions between armies, cities, central power, great landowners and eventually the churches. Since money played a more and more important role in mediating wealth circulation, monetary and taxation policies got intimately embedded together. This work leads to numerical and dynamic results regarding the evolution of monetary aggregates, taxation rates and imperial budget. Noticeably, comparing the two latter would imply that the Empire population was barely living at survival rate. This is quite opposite to our estimate of the overall degree of prosperity. In reality, provincial powers were able to capture a significant share of tax revenues, although our sources confuse tax levies and public spending. What is thus at stake is how that 'black matter' gets effectively shared between these different layers of powerful power classes and how it shapes the political conflicts of the Roman society

3 editions published between 2010 and 2014 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in French and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

School-to-work transition is an important stage in reaching adulthood and one that has long lasting impacts on individuals' professional trajectories. Based on the combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses, this PhD research studies the school-to-work transition of North African immigrants' descendants by focusing on the articulation of race and gender discriminations. In this perspective, we use the intersectional approach which states that power relations, and consequently inequalities created by them, are mutually influenced. Our statistical analysis of the Generation 2004 survey (Céreq), combined with our qualitative analysis of around thirty in-depth interviews, sheds light on the difficulties that punctuate school-to-work trajectories of North African immigrants' descendants, in comparison with native and Portuguese descendants. Their school-to-work transition is characterized by difficulties in job access, especially stable ones, and overexposure to unemployment and inactivity. Moreover, while second generation North African women face the same gender penalties as other women, these penalties are shaped by racial specificities which do not systematically lead to an increase of discriminatory effects. This research also emphasizes the complexity of their discrimination experience. Discriminatory treatments are hard to detect because their authors are either not conscious of producing them or dissimulate them. Furthermore, persons exposed to discrimination have difficulties declaring it and many distance their own trajectories from it. Nonetheless, their professional careers are marked by the bypassing of recurrent obstacles linked to discriminations

2 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in French and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To write the history of the different ways that (1615 caractères) Michelangelo's frescos have been represented through photography and illustration, one must first study the images that they competed with until the end ofthe 19th century which were interpretative prints (Ch. l) and engravings depicted in iHustrated books (Ch. 2). Certain models ofrepresentation from earlier techniques were used while others were abandoned. It is thanks to these images that the frescoes ofthe Sistine Chapel and the Pauline Chapel are better known and have been studied by a larger audience. Without knowing the advantages and disadvantages involved in the use ofcertain photographic and -substitution ofthese processes and the generalization of their use that prevailed during the creation ofthe new models of representation giving them a new legitimacy, linked to the technical image. These models are marked by an evolution. Two enterprises, one founded by Adolphe Braun (Ch. 5) and one founded by James Anderson (Ch. 6), played a fundamental role in the invention of these "new ways of seeing", between 1869 and 1911. Under the influence of the competition of other players (Ch. 7) and thanks to the shift to illustrated printed matter, the enterprises had to contribute to the development of a standard of representation, valid until the end of the time considered in our research (Ch. 8). These collections of frescoes hence have a specifically photographic and photomechanical "image"

2 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The subject of this thesis concerns the nature and methods of the photographic representation of time. Through an analysis of different examples drawn from the history of photography, this study offers a demonstration of how, contrary to the claims of certain theorists that the photographic image simply annuls time, the photographic image in fact unveils a host of representations of time, allowing an understanding of temporality as transience. The crux of this study lies in the possibility of disrupting the entrancing union of instant and eternity : in some cases at least, photography seems capable of representing the ephemeral without necessarily subjecting it to the tyranny of the eternal
L'expérience ordinaire : fabrication d'un énoncé de jardin by Cyrille Marlin( Book )

2 editions published between 2008 and 2015 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How can we use the individual experience in the public space building process ? One way to answer is to make the hypothesis that our ability to put into words the ordinary dimension of the experience needs to be developed. With this aim in view, we first have to differenciate "particular experiences", which we are really used to tell, from the "ordinary experience", much more difficult to appreciate. The ordinary experience is the familiar substratum of our activities, to which we usually don't get many attention and which we don't discern very well because it is too close to us and too common. My research aims at developping this dimension of the everyday's experience in a conceptual way as much as in a practical way in order to differently tell and see the public space. Progressively appears a peculiar method of observation and statement. I called it "the gardenning method" because it simply consists in "making a personal garden" in the public space

2 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis analyses the great Sicilian earthquake of 1693 through its main features. It examines in particular: the deployment of the disaster between the two main seismic shocks (the first on the 9th of January and the second on the 11th of January); how the event was perceived and described by its contemporaries; the repercussion of news of the earthquake throughout Sicily and Europe; the scientific debate initiated by the event (a debate that, in some ways, continues to this day); the issue of victims and destructions (in Catania, for example, the seism causes the death of more than half of the population and the destruction of more than three-quarters of buildings); the social dimension of the disaster (the diverse behaviour of the disaster-stricken people, the smaller or larger shaking of the established order between one city to the other, the way the populations and the authorities gradually overcome the shock of the earthquake, etc.); finally, the articulation between the disaster and the urban rebuilding (the psychological thresholds that the disaster-stricken people must get over before they are able to reconstruct the first stone buildings, the first floors, the first great cupolas ... ) Overall, the thesis strives to renew the study of this great earthquake -not as famous as the one of Lisbon of 1755-by focusing on the analysis and comparison of its contemporaries' discourses

2 editions published between 2008 and 2016 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

La créativité altermondialiste : discours, organisation, action directe by Brigitte Beauzamy( Book )

2 editions published between 2008 and 2016 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The repatriation of a large number of prisoners of war was an important consequence of the First World War, which demonstrated the complexity of the War's aftermath. The process of returning prisoners was time-consuming and difficult because continuously changing political circumstances and national interests of the concerned countries prevented the prisoners' swift return. On the western front, German prisoners detained in France suffered the longest captivity as a gage during peace negotiations; moreover, captives of other nationalities endured equally harsh conditions. On the eastern front, prisoners' repatriation was enormously delayed because of continuous strife in these regions, especially Russia. The present study examines the actions of two principal protagonists, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Allies, who actively intervened in the prisoners' repatriation. The traditional concern of the ICRC for war victims directed it to increase actions for prisoners, whereas the preoccupation for a post-war international order inspired the Allies. Our analysis highlights the dynamism of the humanitarian action, developed in the form of international and transnational cooperation, by comparing the efforts of charitable organizations, such as the ICRC, and those of the state authorities of different countries. This study shows that the issue of the repatriation of the prisoners of war was resolved through diplomatic, operational, and judicial actions executed globally

2 editions published between 2008 and 2016 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How to analyze the transnationalisation of pro-Kurdish mobilizations? The main hypothesis of this PhD thesis is that the different dimensions of the Kurdist mobilizations in Europe (emergence, action repertoires, temporalities, rhythms, individual engagements, self commitment, etc.) have to be related not to the political structures of the countries where these mobilizations take place, but to the extended interdependence system of the Kurdish movement: they' vary according to different interaction systems (relationships with the authorities, with the media, with the other mobilized groups and internaI relationships) that are not limited to the objectively present actors in a given interaction site. The demonstration of this hypothesis goes through the mobilization of plural sources: interviews with activists of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), observations of demonstrations, analysis of the militant press, statistical analysis of protest events and auto-sacrificial actions

2 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this research is to analyze the phenomenon of copies or representations of the Holy Sepulchre in the West between the end of the Carolingian era and during the Romanesque period, and to determine the evolution of the exegetical thought of the Christian faith till the twelfth century. In a first part it seems important to replace the importance of the model of the Anastasis Rotunda in Jerusalem not only in the gospels and the medieval thought, but also in its different translations, visual as well as intellectual. Sole relic of the resurrection and sole witness of the messianic promises, the Anastasis Rotunda is one and perhaps even the most important church for the Christians. This research proposes to analyze the different way the church of Jerusalem was used in the West and its place in the theological discussion of the middle Ages. First ail the liturgy, understood as the permanent updating of the life of Christ for the faithful, places the Anastasis at the centre of the Easter liturgy, firstly in Jerusalem and then in the Western kingdoms. The graphic arts (illumination, ivory sculpture... ) are also considered because of the use of some architectural form to express the symbolic contents and meanings of the monument. Finally, a particular attention is given to the architectural variations of the Holy Sepulchre, the construction witnessing a return of pilgrimage or having a funerary connotation ...The show a direct or indirect worship to the relic of the Resurrection and testify of a faith in the heavenly Jerusalem. All these representations translates a specific relation not only with Jerusalem but also with the theological background surrounding the questions concerning the Resurrection, the second coming of Christ and the heavenly Jerusalem
L'atlas de Trudaine pouvoirs, administrations et savoirs techniques (vers 1730 - vers 1780) by Stéphane Blond( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis studies a source neglected by historiography: the atlas of Trudaine. This cartographic inventory dedicated to the royal roads ordered at the end of the years 1730 by Philibert Orry (1689-1747), a controller general of finances who tries to cure at the catastrophic state of tl French roads. The atlas owes its name with two administrators in charge of his realization and whose role deserved to be evaluated: Daniel-Chares Trudaine (1703-1769) and his son, Jean-Charles-Philibert Trudaine de Montigny (1733-1777). The atlas forms a vast corpus which 2500 roadmaps and more than 900 plans of structures. Handwritten sources preserved in a hundred deposits are mobilized to describe the role of the various actors and the technical knowledge implemented. The analysis is led around two objectives: the examination of the methods of making of the atlas and a better knowledge of its stakes for the Power. For that purpose, three great parts are devoted to strong times of its history : its origins, its development and its uses. This study reveals a singular relationship between the Power and the cartographic tool which constitutes the principal support of a vast politic dedicated to the regional planning. With this vast collection of maps, the administrators have at their disposal a very detailed source which makes it possible to evaluate and to plan road work and their incidences. From the broader point of view, it also appears that this investigation rests on precise, procedures and that it influences the parallel or later cartographic productions
Photography and the commodification of images : the Bettmann archive and Corbis (ca. 1924-present) = a photographie et l'industrialisation de l'image : du Fonds Bettmann à Corbis (ca. 1924-2010) by Estelle Blaschke( Book )

2 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study traces the history and development of image banks from the 1920s to the present through the example of two interrelated companies: the Bettmann Archive, a commercial picture library established by the librarian, historian and entrepreneur Dr. Otto Bettmann around 1933 in Berlin and the visual content provider Corbis, owned by Microsoft founder William H. gates and specialized in the sale of digital and digitalized images for print and web. Providing the image infrastructure, image banks have adapted ever-more sophisticated and efficient methods of storage, administration and distribution. As filters and catalysts, these “capitalist machines” influence and regulate the flow of images, ultimately shaping visual culture. How does the information associated to an image as well as the specific forms of analogue and digital archiving and image retrieval contribute to its value ? How does the dictate of economic efficiency shape and influence the materiality and status of photography? What concepts of photography are behind the collection of photographs for commercial purposes and what do the practices of image banks tell us about photography? What do they tell us about the image?
