5 editions published in 1995 in French and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2004 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study focused on the advantages and disavantages of two different dialogue modes with an artificial system : the spoken and written modes. The purpose was to study the influence exerted by modality on users' verbal behaviour and to interpret the results in the light of the psychological theories which focus on interactive and non-interactive discourse. In the five conducted experiments, the tasks given to the subjects consisted in looking for information by using a real dialogue system and scenarios. All the results suggest that each interaction mode has its own specificities. Text makes the control of activity and task easier to the prejudice of the dialogue component. Speech promotes collaborative behaviours but is constrained by the amount of information to process

4 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

4 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

3 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis aims to improve communication skills of Human Computer Dialogue systems through the analysis of system actions and their effects in dialogue. This problematic supposes the use of adapted conceptual tools for the analysis and is linked to the problem of individual human cognitive processing during communication. The theoretical part explores this applied problematic in an interdisciplinary context (between linguistics, engineering and psychology). This presentation allows opposing two different viewpoints in the experimental part: (1) pragmatic approach analyses the partners acts, following a socio-cognitive viewpoint and (2) cognitive approach analyses the information processing, focalized on the individual level. Five experiments (Wizard of Oz protocol) are presented. In the two firsts system was communicating in spoken mode (auditory utterances). These two experiments gave evidence for the utility and effects of help messages (procedural content) and syntax in auditory utterances. In the three last experiments, the system was using multimodal communication (audio-visual utterances). A categorization of information in three types has been introduced ('echo', 'response' and 'opening'). A rule was proposed to attribute presentation modes (auditory and/or visual) in function of information types, in order to design innovative 'presentation strategies'. These three experiments demonstrated the relevance of the analysis principles used to design presentation strategies. They showed type-mode relation importance to predict the effects of acts. Obtained results allow validating the pragmatic approach against the cognitive one. Implications of these results are discussed in the conclusion part, first for the design of system utterances in HCD and, secondly about theoretical consequences to consider

2 editions published between 2003 and 2006 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a multimedia teaching document, the use of the two modalities (visual and auditory) is generally thought to be more effective than the employment of a single modality. Here, we want to know what is the effect of verbal redundancy on the cognitive and connotative processes that are involved in the learning process. In nine experiments, the various contextual parameters - number of sources of information, number of presentations, note-taking, colour-coding, expertise modify the redundancy effect and suggest to us that we should be cautious with regard to the transferable nature of our experimental results. However, the partial redundancy seems to be, through many studies, an effective and appreciate formatGenerally speaking, many more studies need to be conducted in order to identify clearly and precisely the general scope of the redundancy effect

3 editions published in 2011 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research anchors in the domain of humantechnology interaction and focuses on the technology adoption process. The target system is a digital work environment (an Intranet system). It is now widely admitted that usability is a necessary but not sufficient criterion for predicting and explaining technology acceptance (Bonnardel et al., 2006 ; Bonnardel, Piolat & Le Bigot, 2011 ; Demirbilek & Sener, 2003 ; Dillon, 2001 ; Hassenzahl, Beu & Burmester, 2001 ; Helander, 2003 ; Norman, 2004a, 2004b ; Robert, 2008). Consequently, it has been recommended that non instrumental variables be taken into account. In this line, this thesis combines both approaches of technology acceptance and user experience (UX). A role is thus given to ergonomic, hedonic, affective aspects and also to user characteristics. In this theoretical framework, this research aims at realizing two main goals: 1) examining the effect of the complexity level of tasks and of user mood on UX and technology acceptance variables ; 2) providing an integrative structural model that account for the contribution of instrumental and non instrumental variables in the technology adoption process. The main results notably show that usability perceptions are consistent with real usability level (what is in line with Thüring and Mahlke (2007) suggestions). In addition, it appears that affects and usability are particularly reactive variables to system usage, while perceived hedonic qualities are not. These last perceptions are stable over the time whatever the interaction conditions. These results are consistent with those of Hassenzahl (2003, 2004) and Van Schaik and Ling (2008, 2011). Lastly, an encouraging integrative structural model is obtained. This structural model notably suggests that user characteristics, affective variables, perceived hedonic qualities, utility judgment and global appeal significantly contribute to the determination of usage intention. On the basis of this set of results, an integrative theoretical metamodel for the study of technology adoption is proposed in the last chapter

2 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this research was to give an account of the cognitive processes involved in the simultaneous processing of auditory verbal information and corresponding pictorial information. For that, 5 experiments were conducted. Four experiments aimed at comparing different types of illustrations simultaneously presented with an audio explanation on the establishment of mental models. We also evaluated the impact of different systems which aimed at facilitating the co-referencing between the informational sources (i.e. verbal and pictorial). These systems consisted in highlighting pictorial elements, inserting pauses in the documents which gave access or not to pictorial information and manipulating subjects prior knowledge about a target learning. The 5th experiment took place in a research convention and aimed at optimising the presentation format of a Web site. For that, we evaluated the effects of two factors: the modality of verbal information and the presence of animated picture

2 editions published in 2021 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Studies have shown that the presence of illustrations in multimedia documents does not always improve learning because they can be processed superficially. Learner-generated drawing could engage them in more active processing of the document. However, the effects of learner-generated drawing appear to be mixed and depend on the level of support provided during the activity. To better understand the effectiveness conditions of this activity on learning of secondary school students, two complementary approaches were adopted. The first approach was to co-design a learner-generated drawing application on tablet. The second approach was based on an experimental method and aimed to study the effects of learner-generated drawing on scientific concepts learning in fifth grade students. Two studies tested the effects of learner-generated drawing and of its facilitation through guidance (providing students with an illustration during the generative activity or highlighting the elements to be generated). They did not demonstrate any beneficial effects of the activity on learning, whether guided or not. The third study examined the effects of students working collaboratively in learner-generated drawing, and found that it did not improve their learning compared to working individually. These results suggest that other types of support for learner-generated drawing need to be investigated to obtain real benefits of this activity on students'learning

2 editions published in 2018 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The understanding of main dimensions influencing the evaluation and adoption of technological product by users is a growing up research field (Yeh & Teng, 2012). Majority of previous research was based on three theories: acceptability/Acceptance (i.e., key variables in product adoption; Dubois & Bobillier- Chaumon, 2010), user experience (i.e., functional and non-functional qualities influencing experience with a product; Hassenzahl, 2004) and affective-motivational factors (i.e., dimensions related to human functioning influencing judgements and behaviors). Nevertheless, to our knowledge, no unified approach was proposed. Thus, the objective of the thesis was to create a new measurement tool linking these theoretical fields. For the purpose, several studies were conducted at several temporalities of user judgment. The results indicated satisfactory psychometrics proprieties for the proposed measurement tool. Moreover, the statistical modeling showed a main effect of perceived usefulness through evaluation time. Lastly, work has been done in order to propose single-items scales, limiting the classical modeling problems with short scales, to facilitate futures experimentations

2 editions published in 2014 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Automatic symbol recognition can currently be applied to a wide range of technical documents (music scores, electrical diagrams, etc.). Automatizing this kind of task can help some professionals save time (Lu et al., 2005), but it can also generate a loss of situation awareness among operators (Endsley, 1995). Furthermore, as these systems sometimes interpret symbols incorrectly (Lu, Tai, Su, & Cai, 2005; Orbay & Kara, 2011), humans need to be able to intervene in the process to correct any errors as and when they arise. The objective of this thesis was to improve our understanding of the human-machine interactions elicited by this kind of task, in order to determine how best to enhance system performance. We conducted a series of studies during the development of a user-centred design (ISO 9241-210, 2010) of automatic interpretation software for architectural plans. These studies were set within a heterogeneous theoretical framework bringing together cognitive psychology, human-machine interactions and the ergonomics of the multimedia documents. The results they yielded led to several recommendations for designing recognition systems. For instance, superimposing the interpretation on the interpreted document makes it easier to cross-check the information. Furthermore, allowing users to monitor the interpretation process in real time and interrupt it at any point increases performances. Finally, while the highlighting of potential errors can also be beneficial, it can also make users over-confident and thus less watchful
Compréhension et stratégies d'exploration des documents pédagogiques illustrés by Natacha Métayer( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is easier today to offer in one informative document many sources of information presented in different formats. Presenting various media can bring benefits in terms of learning performance, but dealing effectively with these different sources of information is complex. Therefore, offering documents guiding the learner when he is reading may be necessary to promote the construction of a qualitative mental model. Empirical studies that are conducted during this thesis endeavour to determine which formats are most effective while gradually increasing guidance within the document. Thus, four items are tested: the position of the picture relative to the text, the effect of the instructions, the text segmentation and the introduction of a guidance through a figure-ground contrast. Moreover, in order to bring new elements of reflection about how people explore an informative document and the impact of these strategies on performance, the eye movements of the learners were recorded. The results showed that changes in the format of information have an impact on the strategies of consultation of the document, including the increasing eye transitions between texts and illustrations. However, only the segmentation of the text in the form of semantic paragraphs brought benefits in terms of understanding

2 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research work is grounded in the development and evaluation of congregate housing concept carried by MEDeTIC non profit organization. Its purpose is to answer the need of elderly people who wish to successfully age in place by providing evolutionary ambient assisted living services at home. In order to support MEDeTIC developments, the ambition of our work was to engage a psychosocial diagnosis of elderly people needs concerning home, technologies and services. Through the focus of psychosocial and ergonomics tools, these three sources of innovations are conjointly analyzed in the present dissertation in order to identify what is hindering and driving congregate housing implementation (studies A1, A2, A3). Providing acceptability issues, this thesis firstly analyzes on the one hand service functionalities compatibility with activity limitations encountered by elderly people (study B1) and on the other hand familiar experience with technologies (study B2). Secondly, experiments C1 and C2 focus on model prediction and on individual (i.e. age, experience), socials (i.e. care givers opinions) and organizational (i.e. voluntary service usage settings) determinants in order to apprehend cognitive and social processes that drive usage of technical services by the elderly. Based on our findings, practical recommendations are address to MEDeTIC non profit organization in order to foster its evolution
