Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a cancer syndrome that primarily affects the endocrine system (reviewed in Marx et al., 1998). To date, the MEN1 gene, which encodes a protein named menin, has been isolated and characterized in a number of species (Chandrasekharappa et al., 1997; Guru et al., 1999; Maruyama et al., 1999; Manickam et al., 2000; Maruyama et al., 2000; van Kesteren et al., 2001). The Drosophila Mnnl gene codes for a protein that displays 47% amino acid identity, 56.6% similarity, to human menin (Maruyama et al., 2000)
