In order to clarify the pressure limit of a toroidal plasma equilibrium in a three-dimensional geometry, an azimuthally symmetric toroidal plasma was considered. In a tokamak-like plasma, the net toroidal current is necessary for a finite .beta. plasma equilibrium. An analytical expression of the detached plasma radius in and ohmically heated tokamak plasma was obtained. The assumption was made that the (anomalous) heat conductivity is constant and independent of minor radius, r. The resultant nonlinear differential equation has a universal solution for the plasma temperature as a function of r. The shape is very similar to the so-called profile consistency model. As the average plasma density increases, the tokamak plasma which is first attached to either limiter or divertor detaches itself from the limiter and forms a toroidal plasma whose boundary is clearly marked by a radiative boundary layer where the power input to the plasma is radiated away. As the plasma density increases, the radius of the plasma shrinks until the surface safety factor becomes less that (approximately)2, whereupon the plasma disruption starts. The density limit calculated by this model agrees with the experimental observation. 1 ref., 1 fig., 1 tab

Recently a tokamak plasma was observed in TFTR that was not limited by a limiter or a divertor. A model is proposed to explain this equilibrium, which is called a detached plasma. The model consists of (1) the core plasma where ohmic heating power is lost by anomalous heat conduction and (2) the shell plasma where the heat from the core plasma is radiated away by the atomic processes of impurity ions. A simple scaling law is proposed to test the validity of this model

A hollow cathode discharge (HCD) is described that produces a highly ionized steady-state plasma at a temperature 1-10 eV, in a volume as large as 10,000 cu cm, with background neutral gas density = 10 to the 13th power/cu cm. The HCD is generated by the prescription: gas flow (H2, He, A, or N2) 0.05-2 cc STP/sec through a refractory metal hollow cathode tube into a vacuum; any anode; 20-200 V dc applied. An axial induction 100-1000 G is used to collimate the discharge and to aid in starting by rf excitation. The HCD runs from the cathode interior, deep enough that pd=1 cmXmm Hg. Current range is 2.0-300 A. Various electrode configurations and a wide range of operating parameters have been studied. The external plasma density and temperature were measured by Langmuir probes. A discussion is given of the confinement mechanism and of the energy balance, both in the external plasma and in the region of the cathode itself. (Author)

The size of a magnetic island created by a perturbing helical field in a tokamak is estimated. A helical equilibrium of a current- carrying plasma is found in a helical coordinate and the helically flowing current in the cylinder that borders the plasma is calculated. From that solution, it is concluded that the helical perturbation of (approximately)10/sup /minus/4/ of the total plasma current is sufficient to cause an island width of approximately 5% of the plasma radius. 6 refs
