The royal families of Europe by Geoffrey Hindley( Book )

9 editions published between 1979 and 2000 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Geoffrey Hindley's account speculates on the role of and prospects for modern monarchy. He argues that the almost now powerless institution does have its advantages as a method of choosing a head of state. It can embody values of public service and attract traditional loyalties and, indeed, has been discovered to offer a constitutional mechanism adaptable to the conditions of mass democracy. Here the formal functions of head of state should be detached from the political context." "In the Australian referendum of late 1999, a selection process which depends on biology confirmed by popular assent won approval, however grudging, from a hard-headed and commonsensical electorate which rejected the republican option. Voters the world over are liable to become disillusioned with their political class. Republican regimes are by no means free of corruption and scandal and a 'presidential' process which excludes politicians can have its attractions. For Europe's royals and ex-royals, the author finds that the third millennium could bring some interesting developments."--Jacket
