Suyin, Witwe eines Generals der chinesischen Nationalarmee, empfindet - zunächst fast wider Willen - eine tiefe Leidenschaft für den amerikanischen Reporter Marc Elliot. Die Konflikte dieser Bindung beruhen einerseits auf der besonderen Situation und Gefühlslage Suyins, andererseits auf den privaten Problemen Elliots, dessen Frau nach der gescheiterten Ehe nicht in die Scheidung einwilligt. Das Liebesverhältnis, von beiden Seiten ohne Leichtfertigkeit eingegangen, scheint bereits alle Hindernisse persönlicher, gesellschaftlicher und politischer Art überwunden zu haben, da wird Elliot als Kriegsberichterstatter nach Korea berufen. Suyin, auf sich allein gestellt, verliert durch die Intrigen der scheinheiligen englischen Kolonialgesellschaft ihren Posten als Assistenzärztin der Klinik. Zum Schluß muß sie erfahren, daß Elliot gefallen ist. Sie beschließt, in die Volksrepublik China zurückzukehren, weil sie sicher ist, dort gebraucht zu werden. Das farbenprächtige Melodram gehörte 1955 zu den Kassenschlagern des Jahres und lief auch noch lange danach mit Erfolg im Kino. Die Produktion erhielt drei "Oscars"--Für die Filmmusik von Alfred Newman; für den Song - "Love is a Many Spendored Thing" - von Sammy Fein sowie für die Kostüme von Paul Francis Webster
