Survival in emergency escape from passenger aircraft by Clyde C Snow( )

7 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The human factors data from three aircraft accidents involving emergency evacuations are reviewed. Of the 261 passengers aboard, 105 died in attempts to escape during the 1- to 3-minutes prior to the build-up of a lethal thermotoxic environment within the cabin. In all three accidents, decelerative forces were mild and cabin destruction and impact injuries minimal. The three most prominent factors influencing survival were found to be: distance between the occupant's seat and the exit he attempts to use; sex, with adult males having a strong advantage; among adult males, age, with younger males the more frequent survivors. Age and sex are also significant factors in determining frequency and severity of injuries among survivors. Comparison of the accident evacutions with test evacutions indicate that, in the latter, the biobehavioral factors disadvantageous to elderly males and adult females are not present. (Author)

A Snowman Made of Sand by J. J Carroll( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Last year in England, Australian Ethan Harvey not only met his?perfect? man in Tristan Lewin-Jones, Ethan shared a wonderful Christmas with Tristan's?perfect? family--an ideal British holiday full of genteel good cheer and all the traditional trimmings. Now Tris and Ethan are living in Sydney, and Tris wants the quintessential Australian beach Christmas, with sun, sand, surf, seafood ... and the Harveys. But Ethan didn't mention the Harveys are politically incorrect, rude, crude, and loud. He worries his family will drive Tris away. Giving Tris the perfect beach Christmas with the imperfect Harveys is going to take a holiday miracle

Transparent organic coatings on iron are used to simulate painted metal surfaces for simultaneous ellipsometric and electrochemical measurements. These studies show that significant changes occur both in the metal oxide film and in the sub-coating environment during prolonged immersion in dilute Cl( - ) media. The relationship of these changes to phenomena such as metal passivation, coating delamination, and inhibitor behavior are addressed

Basic Study of the Pumping of a Gamma-Ray Laser( )

2 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The most productive approaches to the problem of the gamma-ray laser have focused upon upconversion techniques in which metastable nuclei are pumped with long wavelength radiation. At the nuclear level the storage of energy can approach tera-Joules (10(exp 12)J) per liter for thousands of years. However, any plan to use such a resource for a gamma-ray laser poses problems of a broad interdisciplinary nature requiring the fusion of concepts taken from relatively unrelated fields of physics. Our research group has described several means through which this energy might be coupled to radiation fields with cross sections for stimulated emission that could reach 1 x 10(exp-17)/sq cm. Such a stimulated release could lead to output powers as great as 3 X 10(exp 21) Watts/ liter. Since 1978 we have pursued an approach for the upconversion of longer wavelength radiation incident upon isomeric nuclear populations that can avoid many of the difficulties encountered with traditional concepts of single-photon pumping. Experiments have confirmed the general theory and have indicated that a gamma-ray laser is feasible if the right combination of energy levels and branching ratios exists in some real material. Determination of factor coagulant activities : approved guideline by Charles F Arkin( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This document is a consolidation of the following previously published documents: (1) H34-P, Determination of Factor VIII Coagulant Activity (VIII:C); Proposed Guideline; (2) H40-P, Determination of Factor IX Coagulant Activity; Proposed Guideline. Determination of Factor Coagulant Activities; Approved Guideline (NCCLS document H48-A) is a performance guideline for laboratory, and/or clinical health care professionals responsible for the routine performance of one stage coagulation factor assays that are based upon conventional APTT and PT coagulation tests. H48-A addresses the performance, quality control, and reporting of assays for coagulation factor activity. Sources of error in test performance are also described

Noise in Lead Beta Alumina( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Conductivity fluctuations ascribed to diffusion noise of the mobile ions have been observed in single crystal and polycrystalline ceramic Pb Beta alumina. The observed noise levels are much greater and the temperature dependence stronger than predicted by the standard expression for diffusion noise. The calculated effective ion density, ten to the tenth power ions/cm3, is two orders of magnitude larger than that of Na BEta alumina and Ag Beta alumina. This can be attributed to smaller correlation effects between the mobile ions because of the lesser actual mobile ion density in Pb Beta alumina
