Homogenization of partial differential equations by V. A Marchenko( )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Homogenization is a method for modeling processes in microinhomogeneous media, which are encountered in radiophysics, filtration theory, rheology, elasticity theory, and other domains of mechanics, physics, and technology. These processes are described by PDEs with rapidly oscillating coefficients or boundary value problems in domains with complex microstructure. From the technical point of view, given the complexity of these processes, the best techniques to solve a wide variety of problems involve constructing appropriate macroscopic (homogenized) models. The present monograph is a comprehensive study of homogenized problems, based on the asymptotic analysis of boundary value problems as the characteristic scales of the microstructure decrease to zero. The work focuses on the construction of nonstandard models: non-local models, multicomponent models, and models with memory. Along with complete proofs of all main results, numerous examples of typical structures of microinhomogeneous media with their corresponding homogenized models are provided. Graduate students, applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers will benefit from this monograph, which may be used in the classroom or as a comprehensive reference text

The Spin Poincaré Seminar 2007 by Anne Boutet de Monvel-Berthier( )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the eighth in a series of Proceedings for the Sþ eminaire Poincarþ e, which is directed towards a large audience of physicists and of mathematicians. The goal of this seminar is to provide up to date information about general topics of great interest in physics. Both the theoretical and experimental aspects are covered, with some historical background. Inspired by the Bourbaki seminar in mathematics in its organization, hence nicknamed "Bourbaphy", this Poincarþ e SeminarisheldattheInstitutHenriPoincarþ einParis, withcontributionsprepared inadvance. Particularcareisdevotedtothepedagogicalnatureofthepresentation so as to ful?ll the goal of being readable by a large audience of scientists. This new volume of the Poincarþ e Seminar series "The Spin" corresponds to the eleventh such Seminar, held on December 8, 2007. It describes how this once mysterious quantum reality called spin has become ubiquitous in modern physics from the most theoretical aspects down to the most practical applications of miniaturizing electronic and computer devices or helping medical diagnosis
