Six volumes of recipes, dated 1840-1874, accompanied by twenty-eight loose recipes (most undated), a letter to Eliza Duane from her cousin Kate, and a handwritten song to the tune of "Yankee Doodle." One volume of recipes is identified as belonging to Eliza Duane, and is dated November 28, 1843, another is identified as belonging to Mrs. Mary Wells (undated), and still another was given by S.T. Bagg to Fanny T. Wells, and is dated December 25, 1857; the remaining three volumes most likely belonged to these women or other members of the Wells or Duane families. The cookbooks and accompanying loose sheets contain recipes for various cakes (including "Jenny Lind Cake" and "Election Cake"), preserves, puddings, desserts and soups, as well as directions for pickling (including "Pickled Oysters") and curing of various meats and other foods. One of the loose sheets also has a medicinal recipe for the treatment of cholera ("Cholera Mixture")

Correspondence, legal and estate records, religious writings, tax records, sermons, deeds, militia records, household and business account books and bills and receipts, commonplace books, embroidery patterns, family histories and notes, and school exercises of members of a Wethersfield, Connecticut, family. Of note are several apprenticeship agreements dated 1747 and 1788, and estate records of Robert Francis, 1777, Elizabeth Francis, 1789, and Walter Francis, 1834. James Hanmer Francis, son of carpenter James Francis, studied at Yale and among his papers are sermons, diaries, and a variety of religious writings. Walter Francis sold books in Maine and was a peddler in Georgia before his early death. A significant proportion of the collection consists of letters written to Jane Clarissa Francis and Elizabeth Pamela Goodrich Stillman from family and friends. Other Francis family members represented in the collection are Maria Francis, John Francis, Sarah Russel, Ann M. Francis, and Pamela Francis. Also includes papers related to members of the Welles, Goodrich and Stillman families, most notably James R. Goodrich's commonplace book, letters from Frank Goodrich while serving in the Civil War, and correspondence, writings, and memoranda books kept by Mary Ann Welles Goodrich

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of the Welles family papers from 1791-1871. The collection contains a scrapbook of family manuscripts of approximately 120 pieces, some pasted and some laid in, the majority of which are dated about the time of the American Revolution. There are four pieces of Gideon Welles correspondence with his family (1830, 1861), Edward Everett (1864), and George Bancroft (1866). Fifteen pieces are concerned with Gideon's grandfather, Samuel Welles, Sr., a Captain in the American Revolution; 60 letters and a few poems were written by Gideon's father, Samuel Welles, Jr.; and the rest are mainly letters, legal documents, compositions and memoranda by or to other members of the family, including Ann Hale, Gideon's mother; Lucy, his grandmother; Oliver and Thaddeus, his brothers; Joseph, Thaddeus and John, his uncles.
