Papers of several generations of the Sullivan family of Maine, New Hampshire, and Boston, in particular John Sullivan's documenting his career as a lawyer in Berwick, Me. and Durham, N.H., including a casebook (1770); as a Brigadier-General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, including his defense of his actions at Staten Island for which he was questioned and honorably acquitted and his command of the American forces in Rhode Island; as a federal judge for the District of New Hampshire, including notes on cases heard (1784, 1786); and briefly as president (governor) of N.H. Collection contains two autograph albums of Jane W. (Brooks) Sullivan and Janie C. Sullivan. In one, G.W. Sullivan (presumably Jane's huband's grandfather) wrote a poem ending with the idea that woman has a happy influence on man. The next day, he wrote a more philosophical poem and quoted a work by William Cowper on conversation. There are other signed poems in this first album; one is written to Mrs. Sullivan on the death of her son. Another is entitled "Woman" and gives an idealized view of 19th century woman. Another entry is called "An Ode to the Friendship Temperance Society." The second album contains entries by some of Janie C. Sullivan's teacher and schoolmates at the Masonic Female College at Cokesbury, S.C. In one note from a friend, the Civil War was referred to as the second revolution
