Improvements in radar tracking performance based on the use of interferometric and distributed aperture radar systems, together with the need for command-guided weapons for cost reduction, have placed more stringent requirements on radar angular accuracy. The result of this upgraded accuracy requirement is that fluctuations in angle-of-arrival (AOA) due to small-scale atmospheric turbulence become significant in the error budgets of command-guided weapons systems. In this paper we present a theory of AOA variations based on the incorporation of diffraction-limited Gaussian beam propagation into a geometrical optics formulation of AOA. Measurements of AOA are compared to this theory with good agreement for this type of experiment
Angle of Arrival of a Focused Gaussian Beam in Atmospheric Turbulence( Book )

The angles of arrival (AOA) of plane waves, spherical waves, and focused beams perturbed by atmospheric turbulence in the geometrical optics limit have been calculated by others [1]. Since geometrical optics theory allows beams to be focused to an infinitesimal point, the AOA of a focused beam in this limit becomes infinite because of a D-1/3 dependence of this parameter, where D is the beam diameter. If we apply Gaussian optics theory to this problem, the AOA is no longer infinite at the focal point because the beam size at focus is not infinitesimally small. In this paper we use Gaussian optics theory to show that the AOA varies according to the diameter and focal length of the focusing element and the wavelength of the radiation being focused, as well as the range. Calculated results are given
Comparison of WIPL-D to Other EM Computation Methods( Book )

The computation of radiation patterns of complex antennas and the determination of scattering patterns of complex structures requires the solution of Maxwell's equations in either the time or frequency domain. In almost all applications of interest, these equations cannot be solved in closed form, and numerical methods must be employed to effect solution. Of the techniques available, including the Finite Element Method, the Finite Difference, and the Finite Difference Time Domain approaches, the Method of Moments (MoM) surface integral equation solves Maxwell's equations for conducting structures more efficiently. The electromagnetic computation application WIPL-D (Wires, Plates, and Dielectrics) is a commercially available analysis tool based on the MoM. It has the advantage, compared to other tools of this type, of requiring fewer unknowns for accurate computation, thus reducing the computation time. The reduction in number of unknowns is based on the employment of knowledge-based polynomial basis functions that require only 10 to 20 unknowns per square wavelength, compared to 100 to 300 unknowns for other methods. Also, in addition, because of the use of entire domain basis functions, continuity of the charge is guaranteed. In this paper we discuss this difference and give examples of the speed and accuracy of WIPL-D in practical applications

The proposed system consists of a transmitter, receiver, antenna duplexer, and antenna subsystem. An attempt will be made to phase lock the Varian VKY-2429R EIO transmitter to the receiver local oscillator to give a quasi-coherent system. Quasi-coherent means that the transmitted pulse is coherent near its center and incoherent during rise and fall times. The receiver will be of all solid state design, using an f/4 subharmonic mixer developed at Georgia Tech together with a Hughes 55 GHz phase locked Gunn local oscillator. The antenna duplexer will be an optical subsystem, depending partially for its operation on the change in sense of circular polarization when reflected from a single-bounce target, and partially on the operation of an interfereometric switch used for receiver isolation. The antenna will be a 15 cm (6 inch) lens machined from a piece of TPX plastic, and the beam will be steered by a 2-axis gimbal system. Although there will be no signal processing hardware included in the proposed system, the antenna will have both a raster scan mode for search and a conical scan mode for track. The entire system will be designed to be amendable to the addition of radar signal processing at a later time

Atmospheric turbulence has been shown to cause measurable effects on the propagation of electromagnetic radiation. These effects are significant at both visible/IR and microwave and millimeter wavelengths even though they vary as f7/6, where f is frequency. The contribution of the humidity structure function CQ 2 makes these effects significant for many applications in most wavebands of interest. Although this paper is restricted to clear-air effects, it is pointed out that these phenomena, which are molecular in origin, are also present to a significant degree in adverse weather. Powerful computer-based numerical techniques are required to solve canonical propagation problems involving electric dipoles, magnetic current loops, perfectly conducting and dielectric spheres, cylinders, etc. A critical need remains for real-time realistic and robust analytical techniques that extend detection and identification domains to complex structures. This report describes work done on Contract DAAG29-81-K-0173, An Investigation of Millimeter Wave Propagation in the Atmosphere: Measurement Program, conducted by the Georgia Tech Research Institute during the period September 1981 through May 1987. The objective of this program was to measure the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of millimeter wave radiation, with emphasis on inclement weather effects. Five separate measurement sessions were conducted at a site near Urbana, Illinois, and these measurements were made jointly with personnel from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who furnished meteorological instrumentation and information on experiment design. Personnel from the Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory at White Sands Missile Range also contributed to this program. Measurements were made at frequencies near 118, 142, 173, and 230 GHz to cover all of the major atmospheric features in the millimeter wave spectral range, and were made during clear air, rain, fog, and snow. The equipment comprised a small step-van transmitter truck and an array of four receivers, pumped by a common local oscillator, mounted in a semi-trailer
Experimental Progress Toward Detection and Identification of Electromagnetically Complex Structures( Book )

Radio frequency (RF) signatures have been observed in the scattered return when a passive electromagnetically complex target structure is excited with a broadband pulse. The target range can be reliably determined up to a maximum range that is subject to equipment limitations. The range dependence of the return is found to be consistent with theoretical predictions, which include the role played by soil conductivity. Many activities, military and civilian, can benefit from remote detection and identification of visually obscured structures. RF detection techniques benefit from (1) RF's ability to penetrate obstacles, including soil, (2) RF's broad solid-angle coverage, (3) scalability with transmitter power, and (4) the overall maturity of RF technology
