Contributions to the determination of thermal behaviour of façades using quantitative internal IRT (Infrared Thermography) by Blanca Tejedor Herrán( )

Within the European framework, most of residential buildings do not satisfy the minimum thermal specifications. In fact, the renovation rate across the EU is estimated at 1% per year. To fulfil with the goals stated by European Directives 2010/31/EU and 2012/27/EU, it is necessary to ensure a minimum energy performance gap. From a thorough literature review, it was detected that the thermal behavior of a building is often underestimated or neglected during its construction and operation stages. For this reason, an accurate non-destructive testing (NDT) should be required, improving the shortcomings given by the current modelling tools and diagnostic techniques. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a method for determining in-situ the thermal behavior of façades under steady-state conditions using quantitative internal infrared thermography (IRT). After drawing up a numerical model to estimate the thermal transmittance (U-value) as a key parameter of the built quality, the dissertation continued with a validation process that was executed in two typical Spanish walls from different construction periods. This allowed: (i) refining the proposed method; (ii) exploring the boundaries conditions; (iii) assessing the influence of tabulated values set by international standards for wall emissivity and convective heat transfer coefficients among other aspects. The results revealed lower deviations related to the theoretical U-values (1.24 to 3.97%) for test durations of 2-3 hours. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the use of tabulated values might entail high deviations (40%) in heavy multi-leaf walls with low U-values. Broadly, construction project documents for existing buildings, especially the oldest ones, are not available. Hence, this method may provide information about the building envelope for future refurbishment. In the case of new buildings, the method might allow the thermal behaviour of building façades to be checked according to the design parameters. Despite this, a subsequent literature review highlighted that a gap in the standardization of this method for in-situ building diagnostics is still to fill. Considering this aspect, three studies were developed in order to enhance the applicability of the quantitative internal IRT within the construction industry field. Firstly, the most influential operating conditions were analyzed through an experimental room with a heavy single-leaf wall tested under a wide temperature difference range (3.8 < DT < 21ºC). Secondly, this dissertation performed tests in a public housing stock comprised of four unoccupied buildings (without electric and heating systems in operation), to assess the influence of non-transient thermophysical properties of the wall (i.e. heat capacity per unit of area) on the accuracy of the method. Thirdly, a data-processing method based on U-value time series analysis was proposed and validated through six building façades with heavy multi-leaf walls. The aim was to find a common criterion for stopping the test when it is not necessary more data to obtain a reliable result. Having investigated the aspects mentioned above, it can be extrapolated that: (i) the optimum temperature difference range is found to be between 7 and 16ºC; (ii) the variance in the thermal transmittance could mainly be predicted by changes in the outer air temperature; (iii) the quantitative internal IRT is more accurate in heavy multi-leaf walls with high heat capacities per unit of area, reaching maximum deviations of 0.20%; (iv) the test might be executed in only 30 minutes; (v) the method could allow the assessment of aspects related to the determination of U-value of unoccupied buildings for DT under 10ºC, especially in Spain or European countries with a Mediterranean climate where these test conditions might represent a limitation. Hence, the decision-making could be streamlined in real built environments, increasing the European renovation rate in the mid-term

En esta tesina se han tratado los temas del análisis del ciclo de vida (ACV), cambio climático y energía. Además se ha desarrollado una metodología de trabajo para la comparación, mediante un análisis del ACV, de dos estructuras de obra civil. Por último, se ha aplicado dicha metodología a dos pasarelas metálicas peatonales situadas en la provincia de Barcelona. Ambas pasarelas salvan, prácticamente, la misma luz, pero tienen diseños diferentes. Por tal razón, se han escogido con el fin compararlas. Se ha analizado cada una de las fases del ciclo de vida y se han obtenido los kilógramos de CO2 equivalentes y el consumo de energía primara para cada una de las fases (producción, uso y desconstrucción). El análisis ha consistido en determinar aquellos aspectos de mayor repercusión, sobretodo la energía incorporada, ya que ésta es la que tiene una mayor influencia en las construcciones de obra civil

The construction sector contributes to current environmental problems. It is responsible for the impact of the production of building materials and for the waste generated in construction works. Strategies for alternative production of construction materials need to be found that use construction and demolition waste (secondary production), rather than original raw materials (primary production). In the literature, there are several studies on the management of construction and demolition waste (CDW), as well as laboratory and field studies on the technical performance of recycled CDW products and their incorporation into stone materials. However, there is a noticeable lack of standardized tests to assess the environmental viability of these processes, and a lack of studies on the economic viability of CDW use in the production of new construction materials. Considering the above, the increasingly competitive economic, and the growing demand for more responsibility in construction works to comply with environmental legislation, an assessment tool is required that can compare the alternatives of producing and using building materials from original raw material and/or from recycled material. The tool should take into account technical criteria, which have been studied by other authors, as well as environmental and economic criteria. Consequently, this thesis develops a proposal for a tool that can support decision-making by assessing the production of building stone materials from original raw material and/or recycled material. The tool should help to choose the best alternative, considering a multi-criteria approach and different weights or rankings of the evaluated criteria. In the doctoral research, the methodology was applied to some key stone materials in construction, specifically, in the context of Spain: gypsum, cement, aggregates and concrete. The results of this thesis show, first, that the tool supports the decision-making process by obtaining indices associated with each criterion evaluated, and generates lists of preferred alternatives, which can help to define the best options from different perspectives. The tool can be used to evaluate production scenarios and classifications for the criteria "environmental advantage", "economic advantage" or "equal importance to both criteria." It can provide numerical data, which means that the choice of a material is not simply based on intuition. Besides checking the functionality and validity of materials, this tool can evaluate and compare, both environmentally and economically, primary and secondary production alternatives for the main stone materials in Spain, and choose the best option considering different classifications of the criteria. The results of implementing this proposal for the materials under study confirm that, in general, CDW recycling for the production of stone materials is feasible in Spain, from an environmental and economic perspective, compared to primary production of the same kind of materials

This thesis studies possible solutions regarding the increase of stall, cruise and critical landing and takeoff operation performance of a STOL light aircraft thanks to passive high lift or flow control devices. Firstly, the problem that creates the need for this thesis is discussed as to organise the goals and aim of it. Then, the state of the art is studied, and possible solutions are considered as candidates which are analysed furthermore and compared. A simulation phase ensues after a learning process of the simulation tools that should be used. The best solution candidates are then compared, and an implementation study follows with the purpose of analysing whether they will be feasible or not. This project is part of a joint effort comprising many other projects from the e-project initiative to design a fully electric STOL airplane for air urban mobility operations. Consequently, constant information sharing was performed, and meetings held with those involved with it

En el present document es realitzarà l'estudi per a l'ampliació de l'Escola Montagut, situada a Vilafranca del Penedès, una escola que engloba els estudis d'educació infantil, educació primària, educació secundària i batxillerat. Actualment l'escola compte amb dues línies d'educació infantil, educació primària, educació secundària i batxillerat. Degut a que en els últims anys hi ha hagut un augment de la demanda escolar a l'Escola Montagut, aquesta, no pot afrontar el número d'estudiants i ha decidit realitzar una tercera línia en els estudis d'educació secundària i batxillerat. Per aquesta raó ha demanat que es realitzi un estudi d'ampliació. Primerament, es farà una breu explicació dels precedents de l'Escola, on s'explicarà la història de l'escola així com quan va ser fundada i qui va ser el seu arquitecte. També es farà menció a les posteriors ampliacions que ha sofert. Tot seguit, es realitzarà un estudi d'ocupació de l'escola. Aquesta ha facilitat el número de estudiants matriculats que ha tingut des del curs 2007-2008 fins al curs 2016-2017 en totes les seves fases educatives. Es realitzarà un estudi de la tendència de demanda per decidir si és convenient o no l'ampliació de l'escola, per si aquesta demanda és esporàdica o si és un tendència en augment. A continuació es realitzarà un estudi de l'estat actual de l'edifici, on es comentarà on es troba situat, el municipi, el barri i el solar, per tal de conèixer les característiques de la zona d'actuació. També es farà un estudi de la distribució de l'edifici actual, de com s'han distribuït els estudis, els diferents edificis dels què disposa i de les plantes que té cadascun d'aquests edificis. Un cop s'hagi realitzat la descripció de l'estat actual de l'edifici, i amb l'ajuda d'un informe realitzat per l'arquitecta Silvia Sasot, el març del 2016, en què va visitar l'escola i va tenir la oportunitat de parlar amb els professors, estudiants i directors, es realitzarà un estudi de necessitats de l'escola, tant a nivell estructural, com zones en mal estat, com a nivell educatiu, necessitat de noves aules i espais de convivència. Després de l'estudi de necessitats a satisfer que té l'escolar es realitzaran 3 alternatives possibles per a estudiar-les, veure quina d'aquestes satisfà més necessitats i es calcularà la base imposable per a tenir un cost orientatiu de cada una de les alternatives estudiades. Un cop s'hagin estudiat en detall cada una d'elles, es prendrà la decisió de decantar-se cap a una d'elles i desenvolupar-la. En el desenvolupament de l'alternativa escollida, es justificarà el compliment de la normativa urbanística de Vilafranca del Pendès, es realitzarà una comparativa de superfícies actuals i de proposta, veient quanta superfície s'augmenta, detallat per edificis i plantes. Per tal de que aquesta alternativa sigui viable, s'assegurarà que aquesta proposta compleix amb la normativa aplicable, principalment el Codi Tècnic de la Edificació (CTE). Finalment, es faran uns amidaments de l'ampliació i modificació de l'escola, per tal de poder realitzar un pressupost, mitjançant una base de dades de construcció. Tot i que aquest pressupost no sigui real, és orientatiu, ja que l'import és actualitzat de forma periòdica i es té en compte la localització del projecte. A més d'aquest pressupost detallat de cada un dels edificis, es farà una comparativa amb el càlcul de la base imposable que s'havia realitzat anteriorment. Es tancarà el treball amb l'apartat de conclusions on es sintetitzaran els principals punts del treball fent una valoració personal d'aquest

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) present serious environmental problems worldwide, and most of these wastes end up in landfills or uncontrolled deposits, causing great environmental aggravation. It is known that Catalonia is the first Autonomous Community of Spain that generates an important production of construction and demolition waste, this is why in this study it is proposed the analysis of an environmental evaluation, to know the difference in the realization of a conventional concrete (with natural aggregates ) and two alternatives of concrete with different percentages of recycled aggregates (25% and 50%, respectively), and an economic evaluation, to determine the alternatives to improve this problem. The environmental assessment is carried out through a life cycle analysis methodology, while the economic analysis is performed through a linear economy and the development of an indicator that represents the performance of a circular economy. The functional unit used for the methodology of life cycle analysis is 1m3 of concrete, for natural arid and also for other two alternatives that have recycled aggregates for structural and non-structural concrete. For recycled aggregates, importance is given to the type of waste used in the recycling plant, which comes exclusively from concrete waste; it is assumed that the recycling process is carried out through the fixed plant of Les Franqueses del Vallés. The results indicate that when comparing conventional concrete with structural concrete with 25% of recycled aggregates, the greatest amount of environmental impacts is produced by the structural concrete with 25% of recycled aggregates due to the fact that natural aggregates (75%) generate mineral extraction, but also the recycled aggregates, since they use energies and transport for their mobilization. As for the economic aspect, the lowest cost is the structural concrete with 25% of natural aggregates, this is due to the great cost difference between the natural aggregate and the recycled aggregate, although producing 1m3 of concrete, in both cases cement is the material that carries the highest cost, generating approximately 50% of the total cost of production of the concrete. When comparing conventional concrete with non-structural concrete with 50% of recycled aggregates, the non-structural concrete presents the greatest amount of environmental impacts due to the fact that natural aggregates (which are 50%), generate mineral extraction and have large impacts as to human health, but also for the recycled aggregates, since they use energies and transport for their mobilization. As for the economic aspect, the lowest cost is the structural concrete with 50% of natural aggregates, this is due to the great cost difference between the natural aggregate and the recycled aggregate, which in this comparison can be better appreciated since the recycled aggregate reaches 50%. The rating performance of the circular economy indicate that the yields of the two recycled aggregate alternatives are currently between 68% and 69% of waste reuse, which means that some of the waste is not reused and in the circular economy, all waste must be reused if possible by 100%. The results indicate that in terms of the life cycle analysis methodology, specifically for this study and taking into account the specifications, structural concrete with 25% recycled aggregate and non-structural concrete with 50% recycled aggregate are not viable compared to conventional concrete, due to the large environmental impacts they present. Whereas in the economic analysis the concrete that present recycled aggregates are more viable in comparison with the conventional concrete. This is due to the price of recycled aggregates compared to natural aggregates
