Les stéréotypes( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2019 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Obesity has been increasing worldwide for the last couple of decades. This increase has led to worldwide concern about the health of our population, prompting increases in health promotion programs that aim at improving lifestyle choices, like increasing the practice of physical activity. Even though physical activity is particularly beneficial for individuals with obesity, studies show that people with high BMI are less likely to practice it than those with low BMI. This is likely due to weight stigma. In the case of the targets of stigma current literature does not provide an understanding of the mechanisms by which stigma affects physical activity through its different processes. Moreover, studies on the perceiver perspective rarely examine behaviors and contextually relevant scenarios like social media. The main goal of this doctoral work is to understand how stigma affects the practice of physical activity at a macroscopic level (social media), an interpersonal level (perceivers), and an individual level (targets). Our findings suggest that current research on the perception of stigma limits the construct to face-to-face interactions and explicit discrimination ignoring social context. Specifically, social media could be a context where there is a clustering of stigmatizing communities overlapping with exercise promoting ones which could affect individuals receiving information from these websites. These communities are formed by people promoting weight loss and exercise, a population in which we found that weight stigma might influence intentions and automatic behaviors differently depending on type of stigma, intention, and sex of target. This could lead to escape-oriented behavior from stigmatized individuals, which depending on their resources, could have positive or negative effects on health. These results emphasize the importance of considering contextual information when exploring the effects of stigma on health. This doctoral dissertation also highlights avenues of research that should be explored in order to understand more accurately this relationship

2 editions published in 2006 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study of the learning process from abilities revealed that it is a very complex and discontinued phenomenon, composed of various stages successively solliciting different types of individual determinants (e.g., Ackerman, 1988). However, this branch of differential psychology has only rarely studied the problems of aging although it could lead to an important breakthrough. As a matter of fact, the ability to gain new behaviour, including motor skills is key to maintaining an autonomous lifestyle for old people. Moreover, a large consensus appears about the highly varied character of aging, stating that several individual factors, such as physical activity would diminish its effects. As a result, the current study focuses on investigating the concept of ability to show the wide differences between individuals according to age and physical activity on the mecanisms required to acquire a new motor skill. We have tested young as well as old subjects, active and non-active on the extent of their ability (cognitive, perceptive and psychomotor), and then on their ability to acquire a three-balls juggling task (12 sessions of 20 minutes each). The results reveal that the study of abilities allows several theoretical advances regarding the involvement of age and physical activity in the ability to learn new motor skills. First of all, the configuration of abilities enables us to present the effects of aging in the different stages involved when acquiring a new motor skill, and for example, amongst the elders, we observed the constant involvement of cognitive abilities. Moreover, we have also observed the effects of physical activity on ability level which allows us to put forward a few theories about the part played by physical activity on the aging process

2 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Physical education (PE) plays a central role to promote students' health through physical activity (PA). However, many primary school teachers avoid teaching PE. While an important amount of PE is required to reach benefits from this compulsory subject, the quality of students' experiences during PE is essential to favor students' sustainable commitment to PA. According to self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2002), theoretical setting used in this doctoral work, by supporting and/or by undermining students' psychological needs through his/her motivating style, teacher may influence these experiences. This doctoral work investigated this line of research about quantity and quality of PE in primary school. Our ambition was to answer two questions : What are the factors predicting PE duration and primary school teachers' motivational style ? And, how to help them to teach PE more and better in order to promote PA ? To answer these questions our first study (cross-sectional) aimed to identify determinants and mediators of PE duration and of the quality of teaching in PE in primary school. Results highlighted the predictive role of autonomous motivation, self-efficacy, and pressures on quantity and quality of PE. The purpose of our second study (randomized controlled) was to test the effectiveness of a PE training to help primary school teachers to better support their students' psychological needs on teachers' motivating style and students' PA during PE. Results revealed a positive effect of the training on the teachers in the experimental group. The latter, compared to control group, better supported their students' psychological needs. Finally, the results showed that PE training had a little impact on students' PA. Nevertheless PA in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group when the differences between both conditions, on the dimensions of need support were the most important. This doctoral work highlights the interest to take into account pressures and motivational variables to understand teachers' choices about PE duration and motivating style in PE. It also suggests the importance of PE training to modify primary school teacher motivating style toward need support and to promote the quality of PE

2 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis aims at showing some socio-cognitive mechanisms which would explain « why the spike heel does not guide the heel in sport ». It also addresses the validity of such issue. With regard to an important increase in female sports participation in the last thirty years, sport may not be a traditional masculine domain anymore. Eleven studies including a validation of questionnaire (Study 1) examined the influence of gender and sex categories on social judgements and current cognitive links between these categories and sport. According to Lorenzi-Cioldi (1988), to a social asymmetry in female and male relations would match a cognitive asymmetry. "Privileged" cognitive links between sport context and gender and sex categories are confirmed (Studies 9, 10 and 11). Studies 6 and 7 show in particular that masculine sex is salient in this context and becomes highly accessible in individual's cognitive system (i.e., gender schema). This cognitive asymmetry permits to explain why studies 2, 3 and 6 show the emergence of stereotype in favour of men in PE teachers' judgments. These asymmetries also appear in gender categories. The sport-masculinity association seems integrated in gender schema (Studies 7 and 8) and being learned (Studies 4 and 5). This gendered cognitive asymmetry allows to understand why a masculine profile is considered as providing more chance to succeed in PE for pupils who endorse it (Studies 2 and 3) and why one perceives oneself more masculine when imagining being a successful athlete (Study 7). These studies are essentially based on theoretical approaches arguing ambivalence in individuals' judgments (e.g., shifting standards model; Biemat, 2003) and using indirect methods (i.e., using objective scales, priming and IAT paradigms, collecting response latencies)

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The development of affective computing is leading to the design of artificial devices endowed with a form of social and emotional intelligence. The study of human-computer interaction in this context offers many research tracks. Among them is the question of personality: how to model some characteristics of an artificial personality? How these characteristics will influence the course of interaction with users? This goal rises several research questions: how to define personality? On which models and theories from psychology should we rely to define some artificial personality? Which methodology will help to address the implementation of such a complex psychological concept? What could artificial personality bring to the field of human-computer interaction? And to the psychology of personality? How to experimentally evaluate these contributions? To address these issues, this thesis takes a multidisciplinary approach, at the crossing of computing science and psychology. Given its relevance to a computational approach, we modeled self-regulation as a component of personality. This concept is approached from the regulatory focus theory. On this theoretical basis, a conceptual framework and a computational model are proposed. Our theoretical proposals led to two data-driven implementations (dimensional vs. socio-cognitive) which endowed our artificial agents with regulatory focus by using machine-learning. A French questionnaire measuring regulatory focus was designed and validated. Two user studies (brief interaction with artificial agents vs. repeated sessions with animated agents), where the regulatory focus of agents is conveyed via game strategies, enabled the study of regulatory focus perception and its impact on the interaction. Our results support the use of regulatory focus in affective computing and open perspectives on the theoretical and methodological links between computer science and psychology

1 edition published in 2019 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This project questions the perception of femininity and its relationship to make-up. It is prompted by the impact makeup has on the alteration of a sexual dimorphism characteristic : the facial contrast (FC) (Russell, 2003, 2009). We have shown that in spite the FC's prominence, it remains insufficient to account for the link between make-up and femininity. The results challenge the presumption that makeup is present in assessing femininity, without taking into account biological characteristics. By its social representation, make-up is strongly linked to the idea of femininity. Because makeup is representative of self body-care in women, it becomes a central element for the representation of femininity. Huguet et al. (2006) demonstrates the existence of a stereotype such as « what has been cared for is good », which can be activated by the presence of makeup. We have demonstrated the existence of a social norm that compels women to wear make-up in order to be feminine exists, where makeup becomes a necessary condition for obtaining not only feminine judgements, but also a set of positive characteristics. The process of acknowledging the perception of femininity incorporates perceptive characteristics, as well as using available knowledge in memory, stereotypes, social representations and social norms brought to the fore by makeup. We can then conclude that make-up is not feminine and positive by nature, but that is used as a reference element in multi-dimensional perceptions of femininity

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Older adults are not sufficiently active against the current recommendations. The approach adapted in this thesis was that physical inactivity was partly due to psychological barriers, notably aging stereotypes. The main objective of this thesis was to identify the role of aging stereotypes, and their relation with physical activity. We defend the thesis that aging stereotypes affect older adults' health-behaviors. In the first study, we contribute to the validation of a psychometric tool which measuring aging stereotypes in the physical activity domain. The second study reveals that openness to experience and implicit theories of ability are personal correlates of internalization of aging stereotypes, and are linked to the level of physical activity in older adults. The third study shows that endorsement of aging stereotypes in physical activity domain predicted health though ego depletion, including lowering the subjective vitality in active older adults. The fourth study suggests that incremental theories of ability are more effective on a task related to the physical capacities when counter-stereotypical information is given. The last study of this thesis shows that older adults who participated on exercise program combined with psychosocial intervention report higher scores of stereotypes related to benefits of the physical activity, physical self-perceptions, quality of life and physical endurance, and lower scores of stereotypes relative to risks of physical activity

1 edition published in 2020 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2011 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The objective of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of the concept of exercise dependence, by studying its relationship with a variety of motivational and personal factors. Different theories concerning motivation, perfectionism and self-esteem have been used in order to determine which of those factors were most strongly related to excercise dependence. After adapting the passion and perfectionism scales for use in populations of different ages, three empricial studies have been realized. The first study revealed four different clusters based on the motivational profiles of the individuals included. The cluster containing an important number of individuals with very high scores on obsessive passion and socially prescribed perfectionism obtained the highest scores for exercise dependence. The second study has shown, by using canonical correlations, a strong relationship between obsessive passion and the different composing factors of exercise dependence. Finally, the third study has revealed that the relationship between perfectionism and exercise dependence can be mediated by obsessive passion and by a self-esteem depending on sport. The conclusion of this thesis is therefore that obsessive passion is strongly related to exercise dependence, and that perfectionism and a form of self-esteem extremely dependant on sport, probably play an important role in the development of this exercise dependence

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Differences in engagement and performance between social groups have regularly been observed in the domain of physical activity, notably according to sex and age. Could these differences be socially constructed, beyond the natural biological factors that are likely to explain them ? The studies described in this review aim at providing some answers to this questioning, by examining the influences of sex and aging stereotypes on behaviors. Different mechanisms of stereotype embodiment are investigated, and notably : (a) processes related to the internalization of social stereotypes into the Self, and (b) processes related to the threat experienced when these stereotypes may apply in an evaluative context. These mechanisms are studied within recent socio-cognitive and biopsychosocial models

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This work, based on naturalistic decision-making paradigm (Klein, Orasanu, Calderwood, & Zsambok, 1993) is focused on team sport (handball) coaches decision-making during match. The coaching activity is dynamic and chaotic (Bowes & Jones, 2006) and generated by on-going events, especially during match. Therefore, coaches decision-making studies require to use many theoretical approaches and models (e.g., team cognition, regulatory focus theory [Higgins, 1997], control theory [Carver & Scheier, 1982], persuasive models [Chaiken, 1980 ; Petty & Cacioppo, 1986], dialogic communication [Goffman, 1961], cooperative activity model [Hoc, 2001]). Data have been collected from official games (verbal protocols, defense system choices) or interviews (self-confrontation with stimulated technique recall) and analysed with quantitative and qualitative approach. Results highlight procedural knowledge concerning team management, information allowing players to acquire or update knowledge structures, and influence referee. This procedural knowledge varied depending on the game conditions and is influenced by the coach's deep knowledge of the game and player profiles. Results highlight also different cognitive control modes, and different coaching styles. There exist contextual factors effects on procedural knowledge and cognitive control modes. Among these factors, ratio of strength between the two teams appears especially salient. Therefore, our empirical studies show that expert coaches' decision-making process have some regularity and follow generic rules, heuristics or patterns
