Die Lehrer strafen ihn ab, seine Mitschüler hänseln ihn dafür. Tom erträgt das alles tapfer. Was niemand ahnt: Tom muss sich und seine beiden kleinen Schwestern, Sophie (10) und Fanny (8), alleine versorgen. Der Vater hat die Familie schon vor Jahren verlassen und ist völlig abgetaucht, und Barbara Berger, die Mutter der Kinder, kümmert sich immer seltener um sie. Ein paar Zettel mit kurzen Anweisungen, etwas Geld und gelegentliche Anrufe sind alles, was die Kinder noch von ihr erfahren. Auch Cora, die in die Wohnung unter den Bergers einzieht, ahnt anfänglich nicht, was sich dort abspielt.
