Art Spiegelman er tegneserieforfatter og jde. Han har et meget anstrengt forhold til sin far Vladek, som han gr, hvad han kan for at undgå at se. Ved et tilflde får Art lukket op for Vladeks historier fra fortiden og sin families liv som polske jder under 2. verdenskrig. Art begynder at optage Vladeks historier for at lave det til en tegneserie, og i processen 'tegner' der sig et billede af en mand, der er defineret af sin udmarvende fortid og sin kamp for overlevelse. Historien er sidelbende biografi og selvbiografi, og den bliver samtidig Arts forsg på at finde vej igennem et liv fyldt med spgelser og skyldflelser, hvor han nu bliver tvunget til at tage stilling til sin far med krigens rdsel som ramme
