La Sagouine by Antonine Maillet( Book )

11 editions published between 1980 and 1990 in 3 languages and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In La Sagouine, Maillet first gave written form to the language of Acadie, a language which, she says, has been "distorted by the climate and sharpened by the sea; by the salty air in the larynx and the obsessive beating of the waves in the cars." Her scrubwoman gave disenfranchised Acadians an authentic voice and established Maillet as a writer of international stature." "In this new translation, Wayne Grady brings out the cultural richness of La Sagouine's speech as well as the old scrubwoman's strength of character and irrepressible humour."--Jacket
Beef, Inc. : fat profits and lean standards( Visual )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As traditional cattle-raising by independent producers is displaced by the intense livestock production of agribusiness giants, consumers are paying the price. This in-depth program examines the practices of North American meat multinationals, which raise livestock on huge feedlots. Genetic engineering, growth hormones, antibiotics, the monopolization of world markets, and other issues are addressed, along with concerns that these beefed-up cattle pose risks both to consumer health and to the world's economy-and do not taste very good, either
Navajo warriors : the great secret by Michel Viotte( Visual )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The famous Navajo Code Talkers, memorialized by Hollywood in the feature film "Windtalkers," were an integral part of the armed forces during World War II. Navajo veterans who fought in the Pacific in World War II, used their unwritten Native American tongue as an unbreakable code language, essential in the American military intelligence machine. Richard West, President, Museum of the American Indian, says, "Ironically, the U.S. military used the Native American language as a potent instrument of war although the government had prohibited [native] people from speaking their own language for almost a century."Successive generations of young Navajo men who fought in the elite division of the U.S. Marine Corps, relate their stories in this film. Vincent and his brother enlisted in the 1970s; his brother died in Vietnam. Benjamin, Calbert and Michael are currently training as Marines in San Diego. The film reveals how their strong Navajo cultural identity and spiritual references correlated with traditional Marine Corps values and a passionate patriotism

Simenon en Amérique( Visual )

3 editions published between 2002 and 2013 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hand of God, hand of the devil( Visual )

2 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Explores Canada's role in the development of the genocidal ideology that took root in Rwanda, which was considered the 'jewel' of Canadian aid in Africa. This video focuses on the murder of two Canadian missionaries, killed for having protested against corruption and human rights violations. Brother François Cardinal, who worked at the controversial Rwandan college, funded by Canadian aid money to the Rwandan president's advisors. Like countless others in Rwanda, his killers were never found. Father Claude Simard, the only Canadian to have stayed in Rwanda during the 100 days of genocide, was murdered in 1994--after the regime responsible for the massacre of Tutsis had been overthrown. Since Simard had risked his life to rescue Tutsis, the Canadian government concluded that his killers must have been Hutus who feared being identified for their crimes. However, the video uncovers evidence that Simard died at the hands of the new government, upset by the Canadian priest's objections to its reprisal killings of innocent Hutus. Hand of God, Hand of the Devil raises disturbing questions about Canada's role in Rwanda. Having assisted the former regime, will Canadian aid now sow the seeds for a new crop of killers?"--Container
