It's the summer of 1862, the cruelest period of the Civil War. Rancher Don Pedro Sandoval (Borgnine) denies permission for his daughter, Rosa, to marry ranch foreman John Warner (Hilton). Warner is forced to resign his job and join the Confederate Army. When he finds out that Rosa is pregnant with his child, he deserts the Army and returns to the Sandoval Ranch, only to find Rosa dead, but his son alive. Sandoval blames Warner for the death of his daughter and throws Warner and the infant out of the house. Warner then becomes the leader of a bloodthirsty gang that starts a reign of terror throughout the territory-- their main objective: the death of Sandoval

Tras siete años sin trabajar después de terminados sus estudios, a Enrique lo envía su tía Nati a Madrid para que empiece a ejercer como médico. Al llegar, lo único que hace es darse la gran vida con su amigo Mateo, un detective privado. Su primera intervención como médico es para extender el certificado de defunción del marido de una espléndida mujer que conoce en la carretera. Al día siguiente, ve, en una sala de fiestas, a la presunta viuda acompañada del difunto. Al ser informado de que aquel hombre es el administrador del muerto, decide aclarar el misterio con la ayuda de su amigo Mateo. Las gestiones para desentrañar aquella incógnita, les llevan a Torremolinos, donde les acompaña una joven vecina de Enrique, llamada Goyita, que dice ser cantante. Después de una serie de cómicas y complejas peripecias, durante las cuales son asesinados misteriosamente el administrador y la viuda, Enrique aparece como culpable
