Limited diagnostic value of Dual-Time-Point 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging for classifying solitary pulmonary nodules in granuloma-endemic regions both at visual and quantitative analyses( )

Abstract: Purpose: This study is aimed to compare the diagnostic power of using quantitative analysis or visual analysis with single time point imaging (STPI) PET/CT and dual time point imaging (DTPI) PET/CT for the classification of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN) lesions in granuloma-endemic regions. Methods: SPN patients who received early and delayed 18 F-FDG PET/CT at 60 min and 180 min post-injection were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnoses are confirmed by pathological results or follow-ups. Three quantitative metrics, early SUVmax, delayed SUVmax and retention index(the percentage changes between the early SUVmax and delayed SUVmax), were measured for each lesion. Three 5-point scale score was given by blinded interpretations performed by physicians based on STPI PET/CT images, DTPI PET/CT images and CT images, respectively. ROC analysis was performed on three quantitative metrics and three visual interpretation scores. Result: One-hundred-forty-nine patients were retrospectively included. The areas under curve (AUC) of the ROC curves of early SUVmax, delayed SUVmax, RI, STPI PET/CT score, DTPI PET/CT score and CT score are 0.73, 0.74, 0.61, 0.77 0.75 and 0.76, respectively. There were no significant differences between the AUCs in visual interpretation of STPI PET/CT images and DTPI PET/CT images, nor in early SUVmax and delayed SUVmax . The differences of sensitivity, specificity and accuracy between STPI PET/CT and DTPI PET/CT were not significantly different in either quantitative analysis or visual interpretation. Conclusion: In granuloma-endemic regions, DTPI PET/CT did not offer significant improvement over STPI PET/CT in differentiating malignant SPNs in both quantitative analysis and visual interpretation
Solar evaporation enhancement by a compound film based on Au@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles( )

Highlights: Solar evaporation was enhanced by the Au@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles film. The compound film showed better enhancement than the nanoparticles suspension. Core-shell structure was more efficient to evaporation than ordinary nanostructure. The compound film has a stronger evaporation than the physical combining films. Abstract: Solar water evaporation attracts much attention owing to its widespread applications, including in power generation, seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and clean water production. A multilayer thin film with a physically combined structure has been designed to achieve multi-functionality. However, this film leads to a decline in the evaporation capacity because of the mutual influences of different layers. In this work, a compound film based on Au@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles was designed and fabricated for achieving highly efficient solar water evaporation. The effects on solar evaporation enhancement of different evaporation styles, nanoparticle films, and light intensities were determined by solar evaporation experiments. It was found that the core-shell nanoparticle film showed better solar evaporation enhancement than the suspension of Au@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles, films based on solely Au or TiO2 nanoparticles, and multilayer thin films of Au and TiO2 nanoparticles because of the formation of a core-shell nanostructure. The solar evaporation enhancement achieved by the Au@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticle film could simplify the film structures, reduce costs, and expand their applicability

Synthesis and solar photo-thermal conversion of Au, Ag, and Au-Ag blended plasmonic nanoparticles( )

Highlights: Au and Ag nanoparticles were obtained by a same citrate reduction method. Absorbance of blended particles were calculated based on an independent theory. A calculation model of solar photo-thermal conversion efficiency was provided. Solar photo-thermal conversion performance of blended particles was discussed. Abstract: An experimental investigation was performed on the solar photo-thermal conversion performance of Au, Ag and Au-Ag blended Nanoparticles (NPs). The experimental results showed that both the temperature and photo-thermal conversion efficiency increased as the Au NP volume fraction increased. However, nanofluids with lower NP volume fractions showed a higher Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) since the photon-absorption of each NP was limited. Plasmonic Au and Ag nanofluids showed a better photo-thermal conversion performance than semiconductor ZnO and TiO2 nanofluids. The photo-thermal conversion efficiency of Au-Ag blended NPs (1.75-0.15 ppm) was 30.97%. This is almost equal to the arithmetic sum (30.91%) of the photo-thermal conversion efficiencies of Au NPs (1.75 ppm) and Ag NPs (0.15 ppm) separately because of the separate absorption of different wavebands by the Au and Ag NPs. Our work provides a promising method for preparing working fluids for solar photo-thermal conversion by mixing different NPs to match the solar spectral intensity instead of increasing the volume fraction of the same NP
Enhancement of photo-thermal conversion using gold nanofluids with different particle sizes( )

Abstract: This work describes an experimental study of the particle size dependence of gold nanofluids during photo-thermal conversion in a direct absorption solar collector (DASC). Au nanoparticles (NPs) with different sizes were synthesized using a seed mediated method. Au NPs play a significant role in enhancing the solar light absorption with respect to a pure base fluid at a very low concentration due to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect. Experimental results of the photo-thermal conversion showed that the photo-thermal conversion efficiency of Au nanofluids obtained an average enhancement of 19.9% and 21.3% for a cube shaped DASC and a flat shaped DASC, respectively, compared with H2 O at a relatively low mass fraction (∼0.000008% weight). Reducing the Au NP size led to the enhancement of the photo-thermal conversion efficiency under the present experimental conditions, which could be an effective way for the modification of optical properties and thermodynamic characteristics. However, the size of Au NPs did not significantly influence the efficiency for the cube shaped DASC.
