Research on the teaching of vocabulary was collected, and the validity of such information was examined to identify successful applications of the teaching of vocabulary in schools. Sources bearing on the subject of this study were investigated in detail. The initial surveying and report reading led to the securing of 80 studies that were particularly pertinent to this project. The search was limited to studies dealing directly with pedogogical method, with the teaching of vocabulary as opposed to the acquiring of vocabulary by native speakers of the language. The report also included discussions on an overview of vocabulary teaching, a review of selected studies, linguistic considerations, and research design. The investigators reluctantly concluded from the sources reviewed that "the teaching profession seems to know little of substance about the teaching of vocabulary." They credit the studies with showing that some teaching effort causes students to learn vocabulary more successfully than does no teaching effort, but state they have not demonstrated to the satisfaction of the investigators that any one particular method is better than any other. It was recommended that future research take psycholinguistics into account for research clues in the study of methodology. (Al)
