After a three month musical drought, the composer suddenly "received" both words and music as the best Christmas present ever, on Christmas Day 2002, while driving between Cambelltown and Wollongong. A gentle cradle song is the accompaniment for the voice of Mary, holding her new-born child. She has precognition of the events which will take him to agony and death, but in "this moment", gives him her love
Africa - A Lullaby by Sylvia Rice( )

4 editions published in 2006 in 3 languages and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The tragedy of drought-sticken parts of Africa, with haunting images of dying children, is the inspiration for this piece. The opening D minor section sketches the desolate scene, while the subsequent F minor verse portrays the helplessness of the dying child's mother. In the third verse, in A minor, the death of the child and the mother's grief are pictured, and the final D minor section describes the child's burial and the rain finally falling, "too late to save". There is a tiny glimmer of hope in the ultimate D major Tierce which ends the piece
