There are few senatorial papers from Burton's long tenure in office. What remains are materials which are retrospective in nature, including drafts of Wheeler's autobiography, "Yankee from the West," and correspondence from researchers, political associates, and family members. Wheeler concerning Baldwin's determination to support the removal of taxes on manufactured goods in 1868

Papers consist chiefly of letters written by Ellen C, Wheeler of Interlaken, New York, and sent to her daughter, Henrietta at Oneonta, New York. Henrietta was a student at the State Normal College at the time, so the letters are full of advice in regards to how she should conduct herself and pursue her studies diligently. The letters also contain news about family, relatives, and townspeople. A number of the envelopes indicate that husband and father, John C. Wheeler, was an insurance agent in Interlaken. This collection also includes a set of real photo postcards strung together by a ribbon that depicts a group of six young women in various poses. The cards are not labeled, but it is quite likely to be Henrietta Wheeler and house mates at Oneonta
