"Note on Charts. The small charts given in this and the other volumes of the series were never intended to take the place of the Admiralty charts; I did not even conceive it possible that anyone should suppose so. Nor were the directions intended to supplant such useful books as Nautical Almanacks or other admirable works. The charts were primarily intended to give the amateur skipper a general idea of the look of the bottom of the sea, so that he might, at a glance, take in the shape of the shoals without having to grope out the soundings and imagine the contours for himself. Many amateurs, however, have used these little charts to navigate the whole length of the Channel and have never used any others. Their practical utility, therefore, has been abundantly proved."--Page xv
