Big Ideas : Political Party Machine( Visual )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Stephen Mills, former speechwriter for Bob Hawke, has released a book called The Professionals: Strategy, Money and the Rise of the Political Campaigner in Australia. He describes it as the story of how obscure party bureaucrats have risen up over the decades. They're now briefing the members of the Federal Cabinet and are minor party bureaucrats no more! His most immediate reference is to Brian Loughnane, the Federal Director of the Liberal Party. He's the man that the newly elected PM thanked effusively for running the most professional election campaign. Ever. But it's a bipartisan phenomenon. Federal Labor is guided by the unelected party powerful as well. Mills is joined in conversation by journalist Sally Warhaft after his initial address, and she's more than a little weary of the power of the federal directors of both major parties. She yearns for the day when the 'party faithful' had more of a say. Misha Ketchell moderates this session from the Melbourne Writers' Festival. It contains some very interesting insights, and will feed your prejudices either way
