Numerical and experimental investigation of the Gibson's method by
Pontus Jonsson(
)
3 editions published between 2007 and 2009 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In order to calculate the efficiency of a hydro power plant some quantities needs to be measured. One of them is the flow rate, which can be difficult to measure with good accuracy. There are several methods for that task. Gibson's method is one of them and has the advantage to be economical and easily installed at the site. In order to achieve accurate results with this method, some criterions must be fulfilled. Two of these criterions are the measuring length must be larger than 10 m and the mean initial velocity times the measuring length should be larger than 50 m2/s. These criterions are rarely fulfilled in low head hydro power plants. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the effects of the connecting tubing between the pressure taps at the conduit and the differential pressure sensor. A one dimensional code programmed in Matlab is used for the numerical simulations where the governing equations, continuity and equation of motion, are discretizised with a second order Godunovtype scheme. The simulations are made for different initial flow rates and different valve closures. The result shows that the tubing has an overall small influence on the calculated flow rate error. A positive bias error appears in all tested cases and has a maximum (1.2 to 1.3 % depending on the test case) at the smallest Reynolds number

Economic lifetime of a drilling machine: a case study on mining industry by Hussan Hamodi(
)
2 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Underground mines use many different types of machinery duringthe drift mining processes of drilling, charging, blasting, loading, scaling andbolting. Drilling machines play a critical role in the mineral extraction processand thus are important economically. However, as the machines age, theirefficiency and effectiveness decrease, negatively affecting productivity andprofitability and increasing total cost. Hence, the economic replacementlifetime of the machine is a key performance indicator. This paper introducesan optimisation model that gives the optimal lifetime for a drilling machine. Acase study has been done at an underground Swedish mine to identify theeconomic replacement time of a drilling machine. It considers the purchaseprice, maintenance and operation costs, and the machine's secondhand value. Findings show that the economic replacement lifetime of a drilling machine inthis mine is 96 months. The proposed model can be used for other undergroundmining machines

Digital holographic interferometry in a disturbed environment by
Henrik Lycksam(
)
2 editions published between 2007 and 2009 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Digital holographic interferometry is an optical measurement technique that is capable of measuring the movement/deformation of an object surface with extremely high accuracy, spatial resolution and temporal resolution. But, because it is very sensitive to disturbances, it is mostly used in well controlled laboratory environments. An exciting new application of the method could be for process supervision in the manufacturing industry. But before it can be used in such an environment it must be made more insensitive to disturbances. The work in this thesis deals with post processing of data from holographic interferometry measurements to reduce the effects of mechanical vibrations and random refractive index fluctuations in the surrounding air. The first approach of using a purely temporal interference filter was successful in reducing the noise due to vibrations, but the noise from the air disturbance was only reduced over a very limited spatial region. A more complete spatiotemporal filter that is not of the interference type requires that the spatiotemporal statistics of the noise from the air can be measured. Therefore the rest of the work is devoted to this problem. The method developed is applied to the relatively simple case of locally homogenous/isotropic refractive index fluctuations generated in a small wind tunnel. There is a simple theory for these types of fluctuations for which the method was successfully verified

A hybrid perturbedchain SAFT density functional theory for representing fluid behavior in nanopores by
Gongtian Shen(
)
2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A hybrid statistical mechanical model, which is fully consistent with the bulk perturbedchain statistical associating fluid theory (PCSAFT) in describing properties of fluids, was developed by coupling density functional theory with PCSAFT for the description of the inhomogeneous behavior of real chain molecules in nanopores. In the developed model, the modified fundamental measure theory was used for the hard sphere contribution; the dispersion free energy functional was represented with weighted density approximation by averaging the density in the range of interaction, and the chain free energy functional from interfacial statistical associating fluid theory was used to account for the chain connectivity. Molecular simulation results of the density profile were compared with model prediction, and the considerable agreement reveals the reliability of the proposed model in representing the confined behaviors of chain molecules in an attractive slit. The developed model was further used to represent the adsorptions of methane and carbon dioxide on activated carbons, in which methane and carbon dioxide were modeled as chain molecules with the parameters taken from the bulk PCSAFT, while the parameters of solid surface were obtained from the fitting of gas adsorption isotherms measured experimentally. The results show that the model can reliably reproduce the confined behaviors of physically existing substances in nanopores

Structure of Cesaro function spaces a survey by

The structure of the Cesàro function spaces Cesp on both [0,1] and [0, ∞) for 1 < p ≤ ∞ is investigated. We find their dual spaces, which equivalent norms have different description on [0, 1] and [0, ∞).The spaces Cesp for 1 < p < ∞ are not reflexive but strictly convex. They are not isomorphic to any Lq space with 1 ≤ q ≤ ∞. They have "near zero" complemented subspaces isomorphic to lp and "in the middle" contain an asymptotically isometric copy of l1 and also a copy of L1[0, 1]. They do not have DunfordPettis property but they do have the weak BanachSaks property. Cesàro function spaces on [0, 1] and [0, ∞) are isomorphic for 1 < p ≤ ∞. Moreover, we give characterizations in terms of p and q when Cesp[0, 1] contains an isomorphic copy of lq

Preon trinity a schematic model of leptons, quarks and heavy vector bosons by
JeanJacques Dugne(
)
2 editions published between 1999 and 2002 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Quarks, leptons and heavy vector bosons are suggested to be composed of stable spin (1/2) preons, existing in three flavours, combined according to simple rules. Straightforward consequences of an SU(3) preonflavour symmetry are the conservation of three lepton numbers, oscillations and decays between some neutrinos, and the mixing of the d and s quarks, as well as of the vector fields W0 and B0. We find a relation between the Cabibbo and Weinberg mixing angles, and predict new (heavy) leptons, quarks and vector bosons, some of which might be observable at the Fermilab Tevatron and the future CERN LHC. A heavy neutrino might even be visible in existing data from the CERN LEP facility
