Optical effects of the March 1970 geophysical event at the AFCRL geopole observatory, Thule Air Base, Greenland by S. M. (Sam M.) Silverman( Book )

6 editions published between 1972 and 1973 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The optical observations from Geopole Observatory, Thule A.B., Greenland, during the 6 to 10 March 1970 event are discussed. The spectral data were considered in detail for two periods, on March 6 and March 9, preceding and during the PCA. The ratio of the 5577A (OI) and 6300A (OI) emission intensities for several disturbed periods is found to be consistent with excitation somewhat below the normal F-region heights for production of 6300A (OI). Use of optical and riometer data in conjunction indicates a hardening of the input energy spectrum on the 8th with a strong softening on the 9th, in accord with expectations from the moderate character of the PCA. A comparison of luminosity fluctuations at Qanaq and Geopole lead to movements of excitations with velocities of the order of 250 to 300 m/s. Possible flare effects are noted and discussed. (Author)

AFCRL scientific research in Greenland, 1967-1970 by S. M Silverman( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The AFCRL Geopole Observatory carries out a series of measurements of geophysical interest near the north pole of the geomagnetic dipole field. The nature of these measurements, the scientific and technical background, and the status during the period 1967-1970 are described. A section presenting the data availability is also included

Note on a Traveling Ionospheric Disturbance by S. M Silverman( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The traveling ionospheric disturbance of 13 May 1964, discussed by Thome (1968), appears to have had unusually high amplitude and would seem well-suited for further investigation into its possible extension into the southern hemisphere as well as the possible presence of a simultaneous north-bound wave. With f-plot data, supported by tabulated hourly values as well as, in some cases, the actual ionogram, the authors have found some evidence for an extension of the wave into the southern hemisphere with a phase of 180 deg in accordance with Thome's predictions. Preliminary investigations into a north-bound wave seem to reveal a disturbance traveling at approximately the same velocity as the south-bound traveling ionospheric disturbance. (Author)

A study of the diurnal variations of the 5577 a (01) airglow emission at selected igy stations( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Data obtained from the world-wide network of stations during the IGY on the emission intensity of 5577 A (OI) have been used for the study of the diurnal variation. In addition to the overall diurnal variation, seasonal and sunspot cycle effects have been studied and a harmonic analysis has been carried out on the data. (Author)

2 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

THE EQUATORIAL AIRGLOW( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Published data on the equatorial airglow are critically reviewed. A number of new results, based primarily on data collected during the IGY, are presented for the oxygen green line and the sodium line. It is shown that the diurnal variation of the green line in equatorial regions is markedly different from that in temperate latitudes. (Author)
