Watch this list

| | Comments (8)

If you've looked at a WorldCat list in the last couple days, you've seen a new button: Watch This List or the Watch Selected button shown below:

Or if you've visited your profile since Sunday, you've seen,'ve seen a lot of changes, including a section for the lists you're watching.

What does it mean to watch a list? You get a shortcut to the list from your profile! The list owner gets a warm feeling knowing that you've enjoyed their list enough to link your profile to it. And everyone else gets to know who all likes a list and most likely what library items they like.

Yet another way to connect to people who love their libraries to other people who love their libraries. Let us know what you think of List watching.

Soon, you will notice some exciting changes to your WorldCat profile page, My WorldCat. The WorldCat team is in the midst of updating the design and making it easier for users to find and manage things you've done on - and to view other user's activities via the public view of their profile.

Tagging is in

| | Comments (4)

You've probably already noticed the cool new tags that you see around WorldCat now. As of last week, we have over 3,000 tags. Which is not nearly as many as we hope to have- but we're off to a great start.

You can add as many tags, or personalized category descriptions, as you would like to an unlimited set of items. Once you're signed in, you can apply tags from the "Add to It" section or the Tags tab on an item's details page. View and maintain all your personalized tags from your WorldCat profile page. And yes, you can also browse other people's tags, too.

The new tagging feature is the first of a number of planned enhancements related to tagging that will include keyword searching of tags. Stay tuned as even more tagging functionality and display options are incorporated over the coming months.

200,000th user!

We hit the 200,000 registered user milestone on WorldCat today at 10:09:04 am Eastern Daylight Savings time. We have e-mailed the lucky registered user to make sure he or she is amenable to having a bit of publicity. So unfortunately we haven't heard back yet...but we hit the mark today and we're still climbing! So keep those registrations coming. We'll be celebrating the next milestone again before you know it!

We are so close. It will be any minute now, that the lucky 200,000 WorldCat user will register!! Will it be you? Will it be a friend you recommended? Stay tuned--we'll keep you updated as the day progresses...

Man, we are closing fast on the 200,000 registered user on Worldcat. We are only 619 people away from the goal--and chances are, we will cross the line either today or tomorrow.

It's now that I can also reveal the prize--a brand-spankin' new WorldCat t-shirt!

If you haven't registered yet, take a minute today to do it now. If you're the lucky winner, we'll e-mail you privately and make sure you're willing to have your name published and get a few minutes of fame. We will ask you for your preferred postal mailing address, so your t-shirt arrives where you'd like it to.

If you're already registered, (and curious about how to get your hands on your own snappy WorldCat t-shirt) sign up to receive WorldCat news by e-mail. Of course, as a faithful blog reader you'll be totally up to date, but this way you're covered in case you take a holiday from your feedreader!

If you haven't told your friends, family and co-workers to register on, now's the time. We're averaging about 500 new sign-ups a day, so at this pace we should hit our milestone this week!

*trumpet sound*
We're getting excited here, as the number of new registered users on WorldCat keeps going up. At last count, we're at 194,634. I know this number might seem small right now to some, but the more people hear about WorldCat and use it--the more front and center the Library becomes in everyone's minds as a great place to go for information, knowledge and life-changing learning. Online and in person.

If you have friends who haven't created a profile on WorldCat yet, now would be a good time to mention it to them. We're going to be watching that registered users count pretty carefully until we hit the 200,000 milestone. There's even talk of featuring the 200,00th profile in some way...stay tuned for details!

Unfortunately, some of our profile image functionality is not working properly right now. The team is working to resolve the issue but it sounds like it may take a couple days.

By early next week any images that are no longer displaying should be restored, you’ll be able to add or change any existing images then too. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

Thanks for your patience!

…or any image that tells WorldCat users more about you! Registered users can now add an image to their profile. This image will display on your public profile & public lists- and will help give our community a face as we go forward.

You can also share more about yourself with other WorldCat users via your public profile " where you’re located, what your interests are, your occupation, your email (you may chose to keep your email private if you'd like), etc. Your public lists will also be listed here- and more to come as we evolve.
Or if you’d prefer, your profile can be private.

Just follow the 'Edit Profile' link if you are a registered WorldCat user - or if you are not yet registered, create a free account.
