In October 2019, the silvicultural consultants of the federal and state governments gave the working group "Forest Genetic Resources and Law on Forest Reproductive Material" BLAG-FGR two work assignments: (1) Classification of tree species relevant for Germany and identification of tree species in climate change, and (2) Development of a transnational concept for the establishment of provenance experiments for alternative tree species in climate change. Based on expert knowledge, publications, grey literature, concepts, empirical knowledge and trial results, 101 tree species were identified, of which nine are considered sustainable. The tree species are common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), little leaf linden (Tilia cordata), Norway maple (Acer platanoides), downy oak (Quercus pubescens), Caucasian fir (Abies nordmanniana), Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis), Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) as well as wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) and Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna), which should primarily be taken into account for the national identification of sustainable tree species in the activities of the federal government and the federal states to adapt forests to climate change. For the nine tree species, a national concept for the establishment of provenance experiments was developed and the need for action and research as well as the risks involved in implementation was identified
