The mystery of the supernatural by Henri de Lubac( Book )

35 editions published between 1964 and 2015 in French and English and held by 894 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The view of St. Thomas -- which is basically the same as that of Augustine -- on the relation between nature and grace is described here in detail. It is a view in which nature and the supernatural are unified without being confused. As a spiritual creature, man does not have his fulfilment in himself but in the vision of God. This vision, however, is not in the order of nature as such, but is the goal of nature. Hence there is a valid paradox: the vision of God is essentially man's last end and beatitude, but it is attained only through God's grace. The idea of a human nature which is open to a supernatural gift is peculiar to Christianity. After the time of St. Thomas, however, the way was opened by Denys the Carthusian and more especially by Cajetan for the development of the 'pure nature' hypothesis, whose defects the author goes to lengths to show. Man is reduced to the level of any other kind of natural being and a dichotomy is introduced between man's natural and supernatural end. The author's solution, for which he argues very forcefully, is to stress God's transcendence and integrate the divine call to a supernatural destiny with the offer of grace. Ultimately, however, there is a mystery here: apart from grace man needs revelation, since eternal life does in some way go beyond created nature. From first to last, the final word lies with God's gratuitousness." [Book jacket]

Corpus mysticum : the Eucharist and the church in the Middle Ages : historical survey by Henri de Lubac( )

16 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the major figures of twentieth-century Catholic theology, Henri Cardinal de Lubac was known for his attention to the doctrine of the church and its life within the contemporary world. In Corpus Mysticum, de Lubac investigates a particular understanding of the relation of the church to the eucharist. He sets out the nature of the church as communion, a doctrine that influenced the thinking of the Second Vatican Council. With the publication of Corpus Mysticum, this important text of contemporary Catholic ecclesiology and sacramental theology is available for the first time in an English translation. Its publication fills a significant gap in the range of de Lubac's works available to English-speaking scholars. It will be an important resource in the widespread and ongoing ecumenical discussions among Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox theologians. --

Méditation sur l'Église by Henri de Lubac( Book )

99 editions published between 1953 and 2012 in 5 languages and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On first principles by Origen( Book )

5 editions published between 1966 and 2013 in English and held by 477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On First Principles by Origen of Alexandria, written around 220-230 AD, is one of the most important and contentious works of early Christianity. It provoked controversy when written, provoked further debate when translated into Latin by Rufinus in the fourth century, and was the subject, together with its author, of condemnation in the sixth century. As a result, the work no longer survives intact in the original Greek. We only have the complete work in the Latin translation of Rufinus, and a few extensive passages preserved in Greek by being excerpted into the Philokalia of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus. John Behr provides a new edition and translation of one of the most important texts from early Christianity. He includes an invaluable introduction, which provides a clear structure of the work with significant implications for how the text is to be read and for understanding the character of theology in the early Christian tradition

71 editions published between 1938 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 397 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
