Modeling of coal gasification for fuel cell utilization by M. L Finson( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report summarizes recent progress on a DOE-supported program to construct computer models for potential future combined coal gasification/fuel cell power generation systems. The approach is to develop physically well-founded descriptions for the performance of both molten carbonate fuel cells and coal gasifiers, and to utilize the models to prepare performance maps for each device, enabling selection of the optimum interfaces between fuel cells and gasifiers. In a previous phase of the study, we identified entrained flow gasification as the most appropriate type for providing fuel cell feed gas, on the basis of off-gas composition and the ability to handle a wide range of coal types. Accordingly, a substantial portion of the current effort is concerned with the development of a computer model for entrained flow gasifiers. Furthermore, several scaling laws have been developed for fuel cell performance. Mostly based on equilibrium (open-circuit) considerations to date, these address such issues as the requirements for avoiding carbon deposition, the potential effects of methane conversion, and the distribution of heat sources and sinks within the cell

Solar winds by E. N Parker( )

2 editions published in 1959 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is suggested that corpuscular radiation is hydrodynamic expansion of the solar corona which is called solar wind. Arguments are presented for this expansion of the solar corona in terms of motion of the comet tail aurorae production, magnetic storms, and cosmic-ray effects on earth. The corona is taken to be isotherrnal out to an undefined distance (in multiples of the radius of the base of the corona) and from there it expands adiabatically until supersonic velocities are reached at infinity. The solar wind is considered to continue after five astronomical units on the spiralling solar magnetic field. Applications of the solar wind hypothesis to solar sailing are discussed. (C.J.G.)

Revision of an Informal Memorandum Godiva II-Its Availability and Suitability for Radiation Effects Tests.'' W.J. Buckalew, comp. The Los Alamos Scientific Lab., recognizing the unique nuclear environment offered by Godiva II radiation bursts, has agreed to make thls facility available without charge to DOD contractors on a general schedule of 2 days each month for the performance of qualified radiation effects tests. The procedure for reserving time and space at the facility is outlined. A brief description of the facility is given. (W.D.M.)

Transport theory and spectral problems by G. Milton Wing( )

2 editions published in 1959 in English and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A simple model of time-independent neutron transport on a line as a stochastic process, using the method of invariant imbedding, is considered. Non- linear equations for the expected values (flux) are also obtained and solved, the results are compared with the ordinary linear theory, and possible advantages of the new formulation are cited. Generalizations to a large class of transport problems are discussed. The nonlinear timedependent operator for transport in one dimension is considered in detail. It has a pure point spectrum, and expansion theorems can be proved. These results contrast with those for isotropic one-velocity neutron transport in the infinite slab. Here there are only a finite number of points in the point spectrum, with a halfplane in the continuous spectrum. Approximations to the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the slab case, as well as extensions to the multivelocity problem, are mentioned. There is a brief discussion of recent spectral and expansion theorems for very general geometries. (auth)
