John Singer Sargent : complete paintings by Richard Ormond( Book )

14 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From 1874 to 1882, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) produced more than 200 paintings and water-colours aside from portraiture that chart his development as an artist. The breadth of his achievement includes figures in landscape settings, architectural studies, seascapes, subject paintings, and studies after old masters. From his powerful studies of models in Paris in the mid-1870s to his compelling paintings set in Venice in the early 1880s, the works published in this volume of the catalogue raisonne show the variety of his aesthetic responses." "Working in the studio and en plein air, Sargent travelled widely during the eight years covered in this volume, painting in Paris, Brittany, Capri, Spain, North Africa and Venice." "This is the first time that Sargent's early work has been mapped so comprehensively. With very few exceptions, this book illustrates all the pictures under discussion in colour. Each painting, including several which have never been published before, is documented in depth with full provenance, exhibition history and bibliography. Original research of primary documents and on-site investigations uncovered much new information, presented in critical discussions of subject matter, dating, style, and significance in the artist's career. The volume reproduces a wealth of Sargent's preliminary and related drawings and of comparative works by other artists."--Jacket

John Singer Sargent : the sensualist by Trevor J Fairbrother( Book )

7 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 927 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The art of John Singer Sargent is extraordinarily sensual. The paintings depict and celebrate sources of pleasure - enchanting places, intriguing objects, and striking individuals. In this book, Trevor Fairbrother argues that viewing the artist as a sensualist connects otherwise conflicting elements of his oeuvre and offers a new interpretation of his life and work." "Fairbrother discusses the complex currents in Sargent's life, analyzes how these shaped his work, and shows how his skills as a draftsman formed the foundation for his rapid, broadly brushed painting style. The book is lavishly illustrated with numerous examples of Sargent's oils, watercolors, and sketches - in particular his portraits and studies of models and dancers - that amply demonstrate the sensual aspect of his art."--Jacket

The watercolors of John Singer Sargent by Carl Little( Book )

5 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 805 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) stands among the great watercolorists, shoulder to shoulder with J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer and other masters of this difficult medium. Sargent's early watercolor sketches served as studies for oil paintings and portrait commissions. After 1900 watercolor became the preferred medium for expressing his personal artistic vision. Often spontaneous, these watercolors are masterworks." "This first comprehensive survey devoted solely to Sargent's watercolors contains over 150 works in color - many of them never before reproduced." "Carl Little's text places the artist's accomplishments in the context of his life and times and discusses his extraordinary watercolor technique."--Jacket
Sargent's Daughters : the biography of a painting by Erica E Hirshler( Book )

9 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and held by 604 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most celebrated painters of his day, John Singer Sargent defines for many the style, optimism and opulence of turn-of-the-century America. Among his renowned portraits, ""The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit"" stands alongside ""Madame X"" and ""Lady Agnew of Lochnaw"" as one of Sargent's immortal images. This painting depicts four young sisters in the spacious foyer of the family's Paris apartment, strangely dispersed across the murky tones and depths of the square canvas, as though unrelated to one another, unsettled and unsettling to the eye. ""The Daughters"" both affirms and def
American drawings and watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art : John Singer Sargent by Stephanie L Herdrich( Book )

"The Museum's collection illuminates all aspects of Sargent's career. The drawings and watercolors in particular reflect his activity outside the portrait studio: his sojourns in Spain, Morocco and elsewhere in North Africa, and in the Middle East; his enduring fascination with Venice; his holidays in the Italian lake district and the Alps; his tours of North America, including Florida and the Rocky Mountains; his visit as an official war artist to the western front in 1918; and his work as a muralist at the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Harvard University's Widener Library."--Jacket
Uncanny spectacle : the public career of the young John Singer Sargent by Marc Simpson( Book )

8 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 533 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors contend the canvases present a fresh view of Sargent's aspirations and ambitions, representing a metaphoric self-portrait of the artist as a young man. The early paintings, their relationship to one another, and their reception also shed light on the complex, cosmopolitan art world in which Sargent lived
Sargent and the sea by Sarah Cash( Book )

6 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 428 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Publisher: As a young man the American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was passionate about the sea and deeply knowledgeable about ships and seafaring. Between the ages of 18 and 23 he started his career as a professional painter with a remarkable range of maritime works that form the subject of this exhibition and book. The key works are the two versions of the Oyster Gatherers of Cancale, painted in 1878 on the northern coast of Brittany in France, and the group of studies and sketches around them. The authors relate Sargent's freely handled marine drawings, large and small, to his watercolors, oil sketches, and finished oil paintings of marine subjects. The works demonstrate his transition from a plein-air painter to a tonalist exploring interiors and urban scenes. Also presented is a unique scrapbook, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that includes more than 50 drawings and sketches, mostly of sea scenes, and postcards and commercial photography of works of art, architecture, and tourist views. This scrapbook provides an intimate glimpse at the thoughts and experiences of the young artist on his first European voyage
The desert and the sown : the Syrian adventures of the female Lawrence of Arabia by Gertrude Lowthian Bell( )

3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 423 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"By the standards of any age, the life of Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) was extraordinary. During her travels in the Middle East, she rode with bandits; was captured by Bedouins; and sojourned in a harem. Her colleagues and friends included Winston Churchill, T.E. Lawrence, and Arabian sheiks. During World War I she worked for British intelligence and later played a crucial role in creating the modern Middle East." "Bell's adventurous career belied her privileged upbringing and sharply contrasted with an era when the parlor and the nursery marked the expected, conventional boundaries of an Englishwoman's life. (Still, it would take Bell a dozen years to be recognized by, and admitted to, the patriarchal Royal Geographical Society.)" "Passionate about Arabia, then an inhospitable land of nomadic and warring tribes under Turkish control, she wrote this now classic account of her 1905 trip across the Syrian Desert from Jericho to Antioch. To read it is to be transported."--Jacket
Great expectations : John Singer Sargent painting children by Barbara Dayer Gallati( Book )

13 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 406 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The title of the book makes ironic reference to Charles Dickens's famous novel Great Expectations and signals that Sargent's paintings of children are interpreted here in light of the expectations associated with childhood as it was represented in the art and literature of the late nineteenth century - a period then acknowledged as the advent of the "Century of the Child." The investigation traces how Sargent reacted to the contemporary shift in childhood's meaning and used child imagery to advance his professional standing with the public and critics. In turn, this strategy aided in removing child imagery from the grip of Victorian sentiment, elevating it to a higher level in the hierarchy of artistic subject matter." "The book includes five essays by three notable art historians, as well as a Biographical Index of Child Sitters, and is illustrated with a wide array of Sargent's works, including the earliest known oil portrait from his hand (an intimate 1875 portrait of his five-year-old sister) and some of the best-loved paintings of his career. In addition, a wealth of comparative works by his contemporaries is provided along with a selection of Sargent family photographs, some of which are published here for the first time."--Jacket
John Singer Sargent : the male nudes by John Esten( Book )

5 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 393 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Published on occasion of the major Sargent retrospective traveling to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999, John Singer Sargent: The Male Nudes brings to light a fascinating portion of Sargent's work long hidden from the public eye. Beginning in his adolescence, and throughout his distinguished career, John Singer Sargent, the celebrated painter of patricians, produced a superbly rendered, uninhibited book of work that was rarely seen and never exhibited: the male nudes. Models were a significant aspect of the great painter's profession, whether they were commission-producing society "sitters" or professional models used as reference for his three Boston mural projects or works created for his private enjoyment--one young Italian model stayed in the artist's employ for nearly twenty-six years. Sargent's enduring subject was capturing the "human form divine" in portraits of the fashionable and famous and the absolute male. Over the last century, these little-known works have been dispersed to museum archives and private collections throughout the United States and Great Britain. John Esten has unearthed the most extraordinary of these images, ranging from vibrant watercolors and oil paintings to charcoal studies, published here for the first time in a single volume. -- from publisher description
