The pursuit of certainty : religious and cultural formulations by Wendy James( )

25 editions published between 1995 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,080 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Pursuit of Certainty is a convincing demonstration of anthropology's relevance to the contemporary world and its turbulence. It offers ground-level insights into a growing global consensus about the primacy of cultural difference; into the shrill new certainties which are spreading in some areas though being resisted in others: and into the 'post-Enlightenment' rise of religious justification in human affairs
The philosophy of enchantment : studies in folktale, cultural criticism, and anthropology by R. G Collingwood( )

22 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 1,779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the long-awaited publication of a set of writings by the British philosopher, historian, and archaeologist R.G. Collingwood on critical, anthropological, and cultural themes only hinted at in his previously available work. At the centre of the book are six chapters of a study of folktale and magic, composed by Collingwood in the mid-1930s and intended for development into a book. Here Collingwood applies the principles of his philosophy of history to problems in the long-term evolution of human society and culture." "The volume opens with three substantial introductory essays by the editors, authorities in the fields of critical and literary history, social and cultural anthropology, and the philosophy of history and the history of ideas; they provide their explanatory and contextual notes to guide the reader through the texts. The Philosophy of Enchantment brings hitherto unrecognized areas of Collingwood's achievement to light, and demonstrates the broad range of his intellectual engagements, their integration, and their relevance to current areas of debate in the fields of philosophy, cultural studies, social and literary history, and anthropology."--Jacket

The ceremonial animal : a new portrait of anthropology by Wendy James( Book )

20 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and held by 638 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Adapting Wittgenstein's concept of the human species as 'a ceremonial animal', Wendy James writes vividly and readably. Her new overview advocates a clear line of argument: that the concept of social form is a primary key to anthropology and the human sciences as a whole. Weaving memorable ethnographic examples into her text, James brings together carefully selected historical sources as well as references to current ideas in neighbouring disciplines such as archaeology, paleoanthropology, genetics, art and material culture, ethnomusicology, urban and development studies, politics, economics, psychology, and religious studies. She shows the relevance of anthropology to pressing world issues such as migration, humanitarian politics, the new reproductive technologies, and religious fundamentalism"--Publisher description
Anthropologists in a wider world : essays on field research( Book )

18 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 615 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book explores the transformations of world view and approach as they have been experienced by anthropological colleagues, a number of whom began their work very much in the earlier tradition. They cover experiences of field research in Africa, Papua New Guinea, South America, Central and South Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Indonesia, Japan, and China. Constant through the chapters is a distinctively qualitative empirical approach, once associated with the village but now being developed in relation to large-scale or dispersed communities."--Jacket
The southern marches of imperial Ethiopia : essays in history and social anthropology by Donald L Donham( Book )

18 editions published between 1986 and 2002 in English and held by 413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These essays offer an approach to the understanding of imperial Ethiopia, out of which the present state was created by the 1974 revolution. After the 1880s, Abyssinia, under Menilek II, expanded its ancient heartland to incorporate vast new territories to the south. Here, for the first time, these regions are treated as an integral part of the empire. The book opens with an interpretation of nineteenth-century Abyssinia as an African political economy, rather than as a variant on European feudalism, and with an account of the north's impact on peoples of the new south. Case studies from the southern regions follow four by historians and four by anthropologists, each examining aspects of the relationship between imperial rule and local society. In revealing the region's diversity and the relationship of the periphery to the centre, the volume illuminates some of the problems faced by post-revolutionary Ethiopia
The listening ebony : moral knowledge, religion, and power among the Uduk of Sudan by Wendy James( Book )

23 editions published between 1988 and 2007 in English and held by 412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This groundbreaking study explores the notions of person, and the foundations of bodily and moral experience among the Uduk-speaking people of the Sudan-Ethiopian border. James focuses particularly on enduring elements of personal knowledge in the context of a hunter's world-view, how alien religious discourse has affected the Uduk in the course of the region's political history, and the rise of a new diviners' movement based upon the oracular consultation of the burning ebony wood

There are fresh insights into comparative politics and history, modern forms of charity, and new readings of some political and historical aspects of Mauss' work that bear on the analysis of regions such as Africa and the Middle East, relatively neglected by the Durkheimian school and by structuralism. This volume is a timely tribute to mark the centenary of Mauss' early work and confirms the continuing relevance of his ideas
