MLA handbook for writers of research papers by Joseph Gibaldi( Book )

154 editions published between 1977 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 12,056 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The revisions in the sixth edition of the MLA Handbook focus on the areas of greatest concern to students undertaking research projects today. Besides fresh citation examples, updated lists of reference works, and an improved typographic design, the new edition offers the following changes: A chapter on plagiarism explains what this offense is, why it should be taken seriously, and how good research practices prevent unintentional plagiarizing. Two dozen new annotated illustrations demonstrate how actual print and electronic sources are treated in research and documentation. Expanded, updated guidelines clarify the use and citation of online materials, including articles from subscription databases like EBSCO. The MLA documentation formats have not been changed in the sixth edition, but many guidelines have been added or refined
MLA Handbook by Modern Language Association of America( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 3,051 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Rethinking documentation for the digital age. The Modern Language Association, the authority on research and writing, takes a fresh look at documenting sources in the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook. Works are published today in a dizzying range of formats. A book, for example, may be read in print, online, as an e-book, or perhaps listened to in an audio version. On the Web, modes of publication are regularly invented, combined, and modified. Previous editions of the MLA Handbook provided separate instructions for each format, and new formats required additional instructions. In this groundbreaking new edition of its best-selling handbook, the MLA recommends instead one universal set of guidelines, which writers can apply to any type of source. Shorter and redesigned for easy use, the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook guides writers through the principles behind evaluating sources for their research. It then shows them how to cite sources in their writing and create useful entries for the works-cited list. More than just a new edition, this is a new MLA style. - Back cover

MLA handbook for writers of research papers, theses, and dissertations by Modern Language Association of America( Book )

21 editions published between 1977 and 1980 in English and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This handbook describes a set of conventions governing the written presentation of research. The recommendations on the mechanics and format of the research paper are based upon the practices required by college teachers throughout the United States and Canada. Sections 1 through 9 treat the logical steps in research and writing--selecting a topic, using the library, preparing a working bibliography, taking notes, avoiding plagiarism, outlining, and writing. Sections 10 through 17 are concerned with the mechanics of writing and cover such topics as quotations and titles in the text, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. Sections 18 through 26 deal with the formal preparation of the manuscript--typing and binding the paper. Endnotes and footnotes are discussed in Sections 27 through 39, which provide examples illustrating citation forms for both printed sources and other sources often referred to in research papers (E.G., films and recordings). Sections 40 through 44, on the bibliography of the research paper, include sample bibliographical listings to parallel every type of note cited earlier. Sections 45 through 50, on abbreviations and reference words, are followed by an appendix on the preparation of theses and dissertations. An index and sample pages of a research paper conclude the book. (Author/CFM)
