On universality and saturation in ocean internal waves by D. Michael Milder( Book )

2 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The apparent regularity in energy distribution among internal-wave space and time scales may be a saturation phenomenon. This paper develops a model of the saturated internal-wave field based on the hypothesis that the saturated quantity is omega squared/N squared, the locally normalized squared vorticity. This quantity, which is a generalized inverse Richardson number for spatially varying flow, is shown in the linearized approximation to be the density of a conserved 'excitation; I; the excitation is assumed to be uniformly partitioned among the normal modes in a saturated field. The resulting energy distribution differs from that of Garratt and Munk in that energy is assigned preferentially to the lowest modes. Among the properties derived for this distribution, and subject to verification by ocean measurements, is a universal law, independent of the stratification profile N(z), for coherence spectra of isopycnals in the spatial domain
Feasibility study of underground energy storage using high-pressure, high-temperature water by R and D Associates( Book )

2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A technical, operational and economic feasibility study on the storage of energy as heated high pressure water in underground cavities that utilize the rock overburden for containment is presented. Handling peak load requirements of electric utility power networks is examined in some detail. The cavity is charged by heating water with surplus steaming capacity during periods of low power requirement. Later this hot water supplies steam to peaking turbines when high load demands must be met. This system can be applied to either new or existing power plants of nuclear or fossil fuel type. The round trip efficiency (into storage and back) is higher than any other system - over 90%. Capital costs are competitive and the environmental impact is quite benign. Detailed installation and design problems are studied and costs are estimated. The continental United States is examined for the most applicable geology. Formations favorable for these large cavities exist in widespread areas
The Chemistry of Nitrogen Oxides and Ozone in the Disturbed D-Region by H. A Ory( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Chemical kinetic calculations are presented which describe the chemistry of nitrogen oxides and ozone in D-region air bombarded by an intense pulse of X-rays as would be produced by nuclear explosions. Relatively latetime behavior is emphasized; early deionization processes are treated in a summary fashion. Special attention is given to the reactions of excited species, which have not been included previously, but which greatly affect the yields of NO, NO2, and O3. Results are given for various altitudes, bombardment intensities, and both day and night conditions. The reactions that mainly control the chemistry are identified, and the effects of the excited species are summarized. (Author)
