Bernini and the art of architecture by Tod A Marder( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 658 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) virtually defines the Baroque style in the visual arts. The best known example, his Cornaro Chapel of Saint Teresa, is famous for its masterly integration of painting, sculpture, and architecture. But previous discussions have tended to focus on Bernini's sculpture alone. This book is an extensive narrative considering all of his major architectural achievements and the complementary art at these sites. His colonnades at Piazza San Pietro, his huge Baldacchino within Saint Peter's basilica, and his provocative Scala Regia at the Vatican all pulse with visual energy, as does his Four Rivers Fountain in the heart of Rome. These works have become international symbols of the Eternal City and deserve serious attention as masterpieces on a par with Bernini's figural art."--Jacket
Bernini : the sculptor of the Roman Baroque by Rudolf Wittkower( Book )

6 editions published in 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the greatest and most influential sculptor of his age. Endlessly inventive and gifted with extraordinary technical skill, he virtually created the Baroque style. In his religious sculptures he excelled at capturing movement and extreme emotion, uniting figures with their setting to create a single conception of overwhelming intensity that perfectly expressed the fervour of Counter-Reformation Rome. Intensity and drama also characterize his mythological groups, his remarkable portraits and his world-famous Roman fountains. Rudolf Wittkowerʼs classic monograph and catalogue raisonne has remained the standard work on Bernini ever since its first publication in 1955. The concise but masterly survey provides an authoritative introduction to all aspects of Berniniʼs sculpture, while the full catalogue gives detailed, scholarly and up to date information on his complete oeuvre. This is the one indispensable book on Bernini for all students, scholars and art-lovers"--Publisher
Bernini : sculpting in clay by C. D Dickerson( Book )

8 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 629 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The brilliantly expressive clay models created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) as "sketches" for his works in marble offer extraordinary insights into his creative imagination. Although long admired, the terracotta models have never been the subject of such detailed examination. This publication presents a wealth of new discoveries (including evidence of the artist's fingerprints imprinted on the clay), resolving lingering issues of attribution while giving readers a vivid sense of how the artist and his assistants fulfilled a steady stream of monumental commissions. Essays describe Bernini's education as a modeler; his approach to preparatory drawings; his use of assistants; and the response to his models by 17th-century collectors. Extensive research by conservators and art historians explores the different types of models created in Bernini's workshop. Richly illustrated, Bernini transforms our understanding of the sculptor and his distinctive and fascinating working methods."--Publisher's website

Bernini's beloved : a portrait of Costanza Piccolomini by Sarah McPhee( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 458 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With lips slightly parted and eyes fixed on a point in the distance, a breathtaking marble portrait of Costanza Piccolomini appears alive. Carved by Gianlorenzo Bernini in 1636-37 for his own pleasure, the portrait of Costanza is one of his most captivating works, but until now little has been known about its subject. For centuries Costanza was identified only as Bernini's mistress, who later incited his rage by betraying him for his brother. McPhee corrects this story in her biography of a sculpture and its subject. This book sets the bust and Costanza's own life against the backdrop of Baroque Rome

Caravaggio, Bernini : Early Baroque in Rome by Gudrun Swoboda( Book )

1 edition published in 2019 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines in depth the painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) and the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Other painters and sculptors gathered around these two geniuses in Rome in the first decades of the 17th century. Together they formulated a new artistic language which later came to be known as Roman Baroque. In a very short period of time, Rome became an international cultural hotspot, the breeding ground of new ideas and initiatives. Artists from all over Europe came to the Eternal City to study the many remnants of Roman Antiquity and to seek the increasing patronage of the popes, cardinals, and the local nobility. More than ever before, painters and sculptors shared ambitions, personal friendships, and worked together, often on large papal projects. Caravaggio, Bernini, and their fellow artists embody this artistic fraternisation. Together, their works tell the story of the birth of this new movement in art, and the radical artistic innovation which would prove to have far reaching influence in Europe. 4 editions published in 2007 in Italian and Undetermined and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bernini's Michelangelo by Carolina Mangone( Book )

1 edition published in 2020 in English and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), like all ambitious artists, imitated eminent predecessors. What set him apart was his lifelong and multifaceted focus on Michelangelo Buonarroti-the master of the previous age. 'Bernini's Michelangelo' is the first comprehensive examination of Bernini's persistent and wide-ranging imitation of Michelangelo's canon (his art and its rules). Prevailing accounts submit that Michelangelo's pervasive, yet controversial, example was overcome during Bernini's time, when it was rejected as an advantageous model for enterprising artists. Carolina Mangone reconsiders this view, demonstrating how the Baroque innovator formulated his work by emulating his divisive Renaissance forebear's oeuvre. Such imitation earned him the moniker "Michelangelo of his age." Investigating Bernini's "imitatio Buonarroti" in its extraordinary scope and variety, this book identifies principles that pervade his production over seven decades in papal Rome. Close analysis of religious sculptures, tomb monuments, architectural ornament, and the design of New Saint Peter's reveals how Bernini approached Michelangelo's art as a surprisingly flexible repertory of precepts and forms that he reconciled-here with daring license, there with creative restraint-to the aesthetic, sacred, and theoretical imperatives of his own era. Situating Bernini's imitation in dialogue with that by other artists as well as with contemporaneous writings on Michelangelo's art, Mangone repositions the Renaissance master in the artistic concerns of the Baroque from peripheral to pivotal. Without Michelangelo, there was no Bernini
