Medieval civilization, 400-1500 by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

159 editions published between 1964 and 2015 in 10 languages and held by 2,376 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This one thousand year history of the civilization of western Europe has already been recognized in France as a scholarly contribution of the highest order and as a popular classic. Jacques Le Goff has written a book which will not only be read by generations of students and historians, but which will delight and inform all those interested in the history of medieval Europe. Part one, Historical Evolution , is a narrative account of the entire period, from the barbarian settlement of Roman Europe in the fifth, sixth and seventh centuries to the war-torn crises of Christian Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Part two, Medieval Civilization , is analytical, concerned with the origins of early medieval ideas of culture and religion, the constraints of time and space in a pre-industrial world and the reconstruction of the lives and sensibilities of the people during this long period. Medieval Civilization combines the narrative and descriptive power characteristic of Anglo-Saxon scholarship with the sensitivity and insight of the French historical tradition

Intellectuals in the Middle Ages by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

118 editions published between 1955 and 2014 in 12 languages and held by 1,669 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this pioneering work Jacques Le Goff examines both the creation of the medieval universities in the great cities of the European High Middle Ages, and the linked origins of the intellectuals - the first Europeans since the Classic Age to owe their livelihoods to their teaching and accumulation of knowledge. The author's argument is that the intellectuals, Abelard most typically, were a new category of person (neither monk nor knight) with a new method (scholastic dialectic) and a new objective (knowledge for its own sake). For the first time in Spain, France, England and Germany the luxury of thinking and learning ceased to be the limited preserve of the higher echelons of the Church and the Court. The effect, the author shows, was to bring about an irreversible shift in European culture. This intellectual history of medieval Europe (translated from the revised French edition of 1984) will be widely welcomed by students and scholars of the Middle Ages throughout the English-speaking world.--Back cover
Time, work & culture in the Middle Ages by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

27 editions published between 1980 and 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jacques Le Goff is a prominent figure in the tradition of French medieval scholarship, profoundly influenced by the Annales school, notably, Bloch, Febvre, and Braudel, and by the ethnographers and anthropologists Mauss, Dum̌zil, and Ľvi-Strauss. In building his argument for "another Middle Ages" (un autre moyen ́ge), Le Goff documents the emergence of the collective mentaliť from many sources with scholarship both imaginative and exact."--Publisher's description
The birth of Europe by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

72 editions published between 2003 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 1,366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book, French historian Jacques Le Goff places the genesis of Europe firmly in the Middle Ages. He contends that it was in the Middle Ages that many of the institutions and beliefs we consider to be "European" were defined and developed for the first time: ideas about a common Christian society, public spaces, courtship, and marriage." "The Birth of Europe presents the historical facts and events that shaped the period, but also the formation of attitudes and concepts of a European "dream.""--Jacket
Must We Divide History Into Periods? by Jacques Le Goff( )

30 editions published between 2014 and 2017 in English and French and held by 1,325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"We have long thought of the Renaissance as a luminous era that marked a decisive break with the past, but the idea of the Renaissance as a distinct period arose only during the nineteenth century. Though the view of the Middle Ages as a dark age of unreason has softened somewhat, we still locate the advent of modern rationality in the Italian thought and culture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Jacques Le Goff pleads for a strikingly different view. In this, his last book, he argues persuasively that many of the innovations we associate with the Renaissance have medieval roots, and that many of the most deplorable aspects of medieval society continued to flourish during the Renaissance. We should instead view Western civilization as undergoing several 'renaissances' following the fall of Rome, over the course of a long Middle Ages that lasted until the mid-eighteenth century. While it is indeed necessary to divide history into periods, Le Goff maintains, the meaningful continuities of human development only become clear when historians adopt a long perspective. Genuine revolutions -- the shifts that signal the end of one period and the beginning of the next -- are much rarer than we think."--Publisher's description
The medieval imagination by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

17 editions published between 1985 and 2001 in English and held by 1,021 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Le Goff recreates the mental structures of the men and women of the past by analyzing the outwardly visible signs of the medieval mind: the images of man as microcosm and the Church as mystical body; the symbols of power such as flags and oriflammes; and the contradictory world of marvels, devils, wild forests, and dreams. What emerges is a portrait of medieval humankind: their beliefs, their life conditions, their customs."--Book jacket
Saint Louis by Jacques Le Goff( )

13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 937 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Armed with the considerable resources of the nouvel historien, Jacques Le Goff mines existing materials about Saint Louis to forge a new historical biography of the king. Part of his ambitious project is to reconstruct the mental universe of the thirteenth century: Le Goff describes the scholastic and intellectual background of Louis' reign and, most importantly, he discusses methodology and the interpretation of written sources - their composition, provenance, and reliability." "Questioning whether Saint Louis was merely the invention of his eulogists, Le Goff penetrates beyond the literary and hagiographical evidence to the human behind the legend. He brilliantly analyzes Louis' progress toward his unique self-creation and its subsequent mythologizing. In the third part, Le Goff highlights the contradictions within Louis and his historical image that previous chroniclers have elided or overlooked. In the end, he leaves us with the saint, rather than the king, with all the paradoxes embedded in that role."--Jacket

Medieval callings( Book )

9 editions published between 1990 and 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 614 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"These essays by eleven internationally renowned historians present nuanced profiles of the major social and professional groups—the callings-of the Middle Ages. The contributors focus on attitudes of medieval men and women toward their own society. Through a variety of techniques, from a reading of the Song of Roland to a reading of administrative records, they identify characteristic viewpoints of members of the fighting class, the clergy, and the peasantry. Along with vivid descriptions of what life was like for warrior knights, monks, high churchmen, criminals, lepers, shepherds, and prostitutes, this innovative approach offers a valuable new perspective on the complex social dynamics of feudal Europe."--GoogleBooks
History and memory by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

13 editions published between 1992 and 1996 in English and held by 602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this brilliant meditation on the varying conceptions of history, Jacques Le Goff, one of the leading members of the French "Annales" school, examines the oppositions between past and present, ancient and modern as well as the various continuities in the evolutions of the historical spirit." "Clearly written, broad-ranging, and richly allusive, History and Memory is a provocative book that will inspire a better understanding of historical work and provide an overview of the "new history" that has revolutionized historical studies over the post half century. Le Goff has written a new preface for the English language edition, which examines recent trends in historiography."--Jacket

Héros et merveilles du Moyen âge by Jacques Le Goff( Book )

19 editions published between 2005 and 2020 in 3 languages and held by 409 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Heroes and Marvels of the Middle Ages is a history like no other: it is a history of the imagination, presented through two celebrated groups of the period. One group consists of heroes: Charlemagne, El Cid, King Arthur, Orlando, Pope Joan, Melusine, Merlin the Wizard, and also the fox and the unicorn. The other is the miraculous, represented here by three forms of power that dominated medieval society: the cathedral, the castle and the cloister. This imaginative history is a continuing story that presents the heroes and marvels of the Middle Ages as the times defined them: venerated, then bequeathed to future centuries where they have continued to live and transform through remembrance of the past, adaptation to the present and openness to the future
