The Aeneid of Virgil : a verse translation by Virgil( Book )

3,507 editions published between 1476 and 2020 in 43 languages and held by 13,576 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aeneas flees the ashes of Troy to found the city of Rome and change forever the course of the Western world - and literature as well. Virgil's "Aeneid" is as eternal as Rome itself, a sweeping epic of arms and heroism - and a portrait of a man caught between love and duty, human feeling and the force of fate - that has influenced writers for over 2,000 years
Eclogues by Virgil( Book )

1,287 editions published between 1470 and 2018 in 17 languages and held by 8,960 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pastoral poetry was probably the creation of the Hellenistic poet Theocritus, and he was certainly its most distinguished exponent in Greek. Vergil not only transposed the spirit of Greek pastoral into an Italian setting, blending details from the life of his native countryside into the subsequent history of the genre. On publication the Eclogues won immediate acclaim and Vergil's reputation as a major poet was established. In this edition Robert Coleman describes the earlier pastoral tradition, sets Vergil's poems in historical perspective and evaluates the poet's distinctive contribution to the genre. In the commentary difficulties of interpretation are elucidated. Theocritean influences are examined in detail and points of interest in the language, style and subject-matter discussed. This is the fullest edition of the Eclogues to have appeared in any language and the first in English since the end of the nineteenth century. It is intended primarily for university students and sixth-formers but will be valuable to anyone interested in Latin poetry and the development of the pastoral genre. --
Virgil's Georgics by Publius Vergilius Maro( Book )

"In this masterful new verse translation, Virgil's Georgics speaks as powerfully to our times as it did to the ancient poet's. Janet Lembke presents this unsurpassed nature poem in an American idiom that is both elegant and sensitive to the meaning and rhythm of Virgil's original paean to the earth. Book jacket."--Jacket

Virgil's Æneid by Virgil( Book )

154 editions published between 1533 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 2,208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Aeneas, Virgil created the most powerful figure in Latin literature, the dutiful yet fallible Trojan prince who overcomes war, suffering and countless setbacks to lay the foundations of the Roman race. Like many of his generation, John Dryden (1631-1700) believed the great classical epics could provide moral models to 'form the Mind to Heroick Virtue by Example'. For his version of the Aeneid, he formed a style vigorous yet refined and drew on the deep understanding of political unrest he had acquired during the Civil Wars of 1642-51 and the Glorious Revolution of 1688. This Penguin English Poets edition includes maps, a substantial glossary and enough background to help readers overcome any unfamiliarity with style or substance, thus making freshly accessible a work of enduring worth."--Jacket

The georgics of Virgil by Virgile( Book )

It is remarkable how many of the writers and particularly the poets of the world have been closely associated with the land and the delights of rural life. The variety runs all the way from the Greek Hesiod and the authors of some of the most beautiful passages of the Old Testament through Virgil and Voltaire and Jefferson into our time. It is a popular but fallacious belief that Voltaire was a sophisticated dweller in cities. Sophisticated in his times he certainly was, but it was not the shallow sophistication which marks too often the tactics, the fancies, and philosophy of the city dweller. It was a deeper, more eternal, more rugged knowledge and experience drawn out of Nature itself which endowed him with ferocious and belligerent sense of liberty and justice. Even Pope, one of the most artificial and sometimes brittle poets, chose a country life throughout most of his existence. -- Introduction
Virgil, Aeneid, 4.1-299 Latin text, study questions, commentary and interpretative essays by Virgil( )

9 editions published between 2012 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Love and tragedy dominate book four of Virgil's most powerful work, building on the violent emotions invoked by the storms, battles, warring gods, and monster-plagued wanderings of the epic's opening. Destined to be the founder of Roman culture, Aeneas, nudged by the gods, decides to leave his beloved Dido, causing her suicide in pursuit of his historical destiny. A dark plot, in which erotic passion culminates in sex, and sex leads to tragedy and death in the human realm, unfolds within the larger horizon of a supernatural sphere, dominated by power-conscious divinities. Dido is Aeneas' most significant other, and in their encounter Virgil explores timeless themes of love and loyalty, fate and fortune, the justice of the gods, imperial ambition and its victims, and ethnic differences. This course book offers a portion of the original Latin text, study questions, a commentary, and interpretative essays. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, Ingo Gildenhard's incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at both A2 and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis to encourage critical engagement with Virgil's poetry and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought."--Publisher's website
