Bérénice by Jean Racine( Book )

139 editions published between 1671 and 2019 in 11 languages and held by 1,528 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the formal and structural point of view Berenice is the simplest of Racine's plays and conforms to the conventions of French classical drama. It dramatises the tale of Berenice, the Queen of Palestine, and her parting from her long-standing love, Titus, Roman Emperor. Although often elegiac and wistful in tone, the play is not only poetic and evocative but truly dramatic in its depiction of the inner struggle of Titus to steel himself to tell Berenice that he cannot flout Roman tradition by marrying a foreign princess; of the vain endeavours of Antiochus to win the Queen's hand; and above all of her wishful resistance to the truth of the political reality in which she and Titus are caught. Threatened suicides and the collapse of Titus's reign are averted by Berenice's eventual dignified acceptance of the truth and her reluctant return to her own country. The play ends bleak and desolate for all three characters, not in the destruction of their love but in the impossibility of its fulfilment. With a comprehensive introduction and explanatory notes, this is an excellent introduction to Racine's work."--BOOK JACKET

Esther by Jean Racine( )

144 editions published between 1689 and 2018 in 7 languages and held by 911 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
