Diplomacy by Henry Kissinger( Book )

126 editions published between 1994 and 2019 in 13 languages and held by 4,025 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this controversial and monumental book - arguably his most important - Henry Kissinger illuminates just what diplomacy is. Moving from a sweeping overview of his own interpretation of history to personal accounts of his negotiations with world leaders, Kissinger describes the ways in which the art of diplomacy and the balance of power have created the world we live in, and shows how Americans, protected by the size and isolation of their country, as well as by their own idealism and mistrust of the Old World, have sought to conduct a unique kind of foreign policy based on the way they wanted the world to be, as opposed to the way it really is. Spanning more than three centuries of history, from Cardinal Richelieu, the father of the modern state system, to the "New World Order" in which we live, Kissinger demonstrates how modern diplomacy emerged from the trials and experiences of the balance of power of warfare and peacemaking, and why America, sometimes to its peril, refused to learn its lessons. His intimate portraits of world leaders, including de Gaulle, Nixon, Chou En-lai, Mao Tse-tung, Reagan, and Gorbachev, based on personal experience and knowledge, provide the reader with a rare window on diplomacy at the summit, together with a wealth of detailed and original observations on the secret negotiations, great events, and the art of statesmanship that have shaped our lives in the decades before, during and since Henry Kissinger was himself at the center of things. Analyzing the differences in the national styles of diplomacy, Kissinger shows how various societies produce special ways of conducting foreign policy, and how Americans, from the very beginning, sought a distinctive foreign policy based on idealism. He illustrates his points with his own insights and with examples from his own experience, as well as with candid accounts of his breakthrough diplomatic initiatives as Nixon's foreign policy partner. Informed by deep historical knowledge, wit, a gift for irony, and a unique understanding of the forces that bind and sunder nations, Kissinger's Diplomacy is must reading for anyone who cares about America's position in the world
On China by Henry Kissinger( Book )

66 editions published between 2010 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 2,537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this sweeping and insightful history, Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book-length to a country he has known intimately for decades, and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. Drawing on historical records as well as his conversations with Chinese leaders over the past forty years, Kissinger examines how China has approached diplomacy, strategy, and negotiation throughout its history, and reflects on the consequences for the global balance of power in the 21st century. Since no other country can claim a more powerful link to its ancient past and classical principles, any attempt to understand China's future world role must begin with an appreciation of its long history. For centuries, China rarely encountered other societies of comparable size and sophistication; it was the "Middle Kingdom," treating the peoples on its periphery as vassal states. At the same time, Chinese statesmen-facing threats of invasion from without, and the contests of competing factions within-developed a canon of strategic thought that prized the virtues of subtlety, patience, and indirection over feats of martial prowess. In 'On China', Kissinger examines key episodes in Chinese foreign policy from the classical era to the present day, with a particular emphasis on the decades since the rise of Mao Zedong. He illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such pivotal events as the initial encounters between China and modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, Richard Nixon's historic trip to Beijing, and three crises in the Taiwan Straits. Drawing on his extensive personal experience with four generations of Chinese leaders, he brings to life towering figures such as Mao, Zhou Enlai, and Deng Xiaoping, revealing how their different visions have shaped China's modern destiny. With his singular vantage on U.S.-China relations, Kissinger traces the evolution of this fraught but crucial relationship over the past 60 years, following its dramatic course from estrangement to strategic partnership to economic interdependence, and toward an uncertain future. With a final chapter on the emerging superpower's 21st-century world role, 'On China' provides an intimate historical perspective on Chinese foreign affairs from one of the premier statesmen of the 20th century"--

World order by Henry Kissinger( Book )

45 editions published between 2014 and 2020 in 6 languages and held by 2,270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Henry Kissinger offers in World Order a meditation on the roots of international harmony and global disorder. There has never been a true "world order," Kissinger observes. For most of history, civilizations defined their own concepts of order. Each considered itself the center of the world and envisioned its distinct principles as universally relevant. China conceived of a global cultural hierarchy with the Emperor at its pinnacle. In Europe, Rome imagined itself surrounded by barbarians. When Rome fragmented, European peoples refined a concept of an equilibrium of sovereign states and sought to export it across the world. Islam, in its early centuries, considered itself the world's sole legitimate political unit, destined to expand indefinitely until the world was brought into harmony by religious principles. The United States was born of a conviction about the universal applicability of democracy -- a conviction that has guided its policies ever since. Now international affairs take place on a global basis, and these historical concepts of world order are meeting. Every region participates in questions of high policy in every other, often instantaneously. Yet there is no consensus among the major actors about the rules and limits guiding this process, or its ultimate destination. The result is mounting tension. Grounded in Kissinger's study of history and his experience as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, World Order guides readers through crucial episodes in recent world history. Kissinger offers a glimpse into the inner deliberations of the Nixon administration's negotiations with Hanoi over the end of the Vietnam War, as well as Ronald Reagan's tense debates with Soviet Premier Gorbachev in Reykjavík. He offers insights into the future of U.S.-China relations and the evolution of the European Union, and examines lessons of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Taking readers from his analysis of nuclear negotiations with Iran through the West's response to the Arab Spring and tensions with Russia over Ukraine, World Order anchors Kissinger's historical analysis in the decisive events of our time
American foreign policy by Henry Kissinger( Book )

39 editions published between 1968 and 1982 in 3 languages and held by 1,842 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'The test of the statesman is the permanence of the international structure under stress.' These words from the opening essay in this volume announce a recurrent theme in the pages that follow. For while some of Henry Kissinger's papers gathered here explore conceptual issues that world leaders often overlook during periods of international tension, and others display the global range of his policy initiatives while Secretary of State, all testify to his overriding concern with the necessity of building a stable framework of world order. The initial two essays, 'Domestic Structure and Foreign Policy' and 'Central Issues of American Foreign Policy,' appeared in the original edition of this volume and have been retained as backdrops for fifteen major addresses delivered by Mr. Kissinger over the past four years. The new selections include a statement to Congress that traces the main lines of détente policy; a review of the step-by-step process of negotiations in the Middle East; an analysis of efforts to achieve accords with the Soviet Union on strategic arms limitation without imperiling American national security; a speech to the United Nations on the imperative of establishing a balanced global approach to economic development and resource conservation; several papers that candidly appraise prospects for new ties between the United States and the nations of Asia, Africa, and Latin America; and one that sets forth measures to strengthen the bonds among the industrial democracies. In their scope and detail, these documents constitute a remarkable set of designs, blueprints, and working drawings by a master architect of foreign policy."--Dust jacket

The necessity for choice; prospects of American foreign policy by Henry Kissinger( Book )

42 editions published between 1960 and 1984 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an attempt to define the major foreign policy and defense issues before America in the 1960s. Underlying the work is a sense of urgency, based on the author's conviction that in this revolutionary age the norm is the fact of upheaval and solutions, however comprehensive they seem, can never be regarded as permanent. The book starts from the premise that many of the patterns of policy which have served the nation since the end of World War II no longer apply. It seeks to assess the contemporary debate, and to indicate some possibilities for resolving the policy issues. The problems which have not been solved, nor properly judged, according to the author, range from national defense, NATO, Germany, arms control, negotiations, and colonialism, to the role of the intellectual in the field of foreign policy

Zhu Rongji on the record : the road to reform,1998-2003 by Rongji Zhu( )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 836 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

China's explosive transformation from a planned economy to a more market-oriented one over the past three decades owes much to the charismatic reformer Zhu Rongji. As China's premier from 1998 to 2003, Zhu displayed a pragmatism and strong work ethic that have been key forces in China's drive to greater modernization and global stature. During this time, Zhu embarked on a plan to reduce the size of government and reform the heavily indebted banking system and state-owned enterprises as well as to overhaul the housing and health care systems. His sweeping efforts ranged from lobbying for the establishment of stock exchanges to revitalizing agriculture through the introduction of a modern grain market. The ramifications of these reforms are still being felt throughout China and the globe, and The Road to Reform provides a real-time look at these plans as they were being formulated during the 1990s to the early 2000s. The second of a two-volume collection containing more than 100 speeches and personal papers by Zhu, this volume is a revealing and insightful look at Zhu's thinking and will lead to greater understanding of one of the world's two largest economic powers

"Now we have the unvarnished record of Henry Kissinger's high-stakes diplomacy during the Nixon years. Here are the transcripts, formerly classified "Top/Secret/Sensitive/Exclusive Eyes Only," of Kissinger's talks with Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Leonid Brezhnev, Andrei Gromyko, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George Bush, and others." "When Henry Kissinger left the State Department in January 1977, he took with him "personal papers" as well as copies of government papers that he had worked on and reviewed, and attempted to close off all access to them until five years after his death. However, transcripts of some of his most important conversations found their way into other files, where National Security Archive staffers tracked them down." "The Kissinger Transcripts offers an unparalleled view of American diplomacy as conducted by one of the most controversial Secretaries of State in modern U.S. history. With the record unmediated by Kissinger's spin, readers can begin to make up their own minds about the merits or flaws of a major effort to transform U.S. Cold War strategy."--Jacket
Soviet-American relations : the détente years, 1969-1972 by United States( Book )

7 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 648 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This joint documentary publication, collected and compiled by historians from both the U.S. Department of State and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provides unprecedented insight into Soviet-American relations during a critical era in the history of the Cold War: the détente years (1969-1972). In Feb. 1969, Henry Kissinger, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, opened a confidential channel with the Soviet Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Dobrynin. During the next 3 1/2 years, the two men met on a regular basis in Washington, both at the White House and at the Soviet Embassy, to discuss important issues of the day, including arms control, Berlin, the Middle East, South Asia, China, and Vietnam. Through this mechanism, President Richard M. Nixon and General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev exchanged ideas and information outside normal diplomatic and bureaucratic channels. The confidential channel also allowed the White House to practice behind-the-scenes diplomacy, thus avoiding interference not only from Congress, but also from the Department of State. Although their methods may have been controversial, the collaboration between Kissinger and Dobrynin helped to reduce tension in the Soviet-American relationship, eventually resulting in agreements on Berlin, SALT, and other issues, and culminating in the Moscow Summit in May 1972. This volume presents a selection of American and Soviet documents on the diplomacy that led to détente between the superpowers. The documents include, in particular, Kissinger and Dobrynin's respective accounts of their conversations in this confidential channel, as well as the official records of the Moscow Summit. Although many of Kissinger's memoranda were declassified in 2002, Dobrynin's reports were, until now, sealed in the Russian archives. In this volume, and its Russian counterpart, these and other important documents are available to researchers for the first time.--Book jacket
