During his lifetime, Stéphanie Mallarmé (1842-1898) was recognized as one of the greatest modern French poets. He wrote extensively on themes of reality and his desire to turn away from it, marrying form and content in revolutionary ways that departed drastically from the more tightly controlled French tradition. Despite his status as one of the first modernists, much of Mallarmé's radicalism has been lost in translation. Finally, in this new collection by Blake Bronson-Bartlett and Robert Fernandez, the magic and mastery of form and diction so striking in Mallarmé's French verse comes to life in English. Drawing from Poésies (1899 edition), Un coup de dés (A cast of dice), and the "Livre" (the "Book"--The overarching conceptual work left unfinished at the death of the poet), this collection captures Mallarmé's true linguistic brilliance, bringing the poems into our current context, while retaining the music, playfulness, and power of the originals. -- from back cover
Mallarmé on fashion : a translation of the fashion magazine, La dernière mode, with commentary by Stéphane Mallarmé( )

15 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 785 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1874, Stephane Mallarme, the great French poet, undertook a highly idiosyncratic project--the publication of a fashion magazine called La Derniere Mode (The Latest Fashion)--that he almost single-handedly compiled. Using a variety of feminine and masculine pseudonyms to theorize about fashion and to advise on popular vacation destinations, home furnishings, and entertainment, Mallarmé created a spectacularly original work. The distinguishing feature of Mallarme's magazine is that it explores the nature of fashion from the inside. While it is a genuine fashion magazine, it also satirizes the entire genre. Various theories have been entertained about the work: it has been viewed as a prose poem, a hoax, and a cynical money-making venture. Furbank and Cain, however, argue that such guesses are hopelessly off the mark. Complete with the original artwork and a contextualizing introduction and commentary, this is the definitive translation of one of French literature's greatest enigmas

A tomb for Anatole by Stéphane Mallarmé( Book )

8 editions published between 1983 and 2005 in English and held by 536 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It was the death of his son Anatole that ... affect[ed] [Mallarme] ... deeply and that inspired him to attempt a major work. Of this work, never completed, 202 fragments remain. ..." This is one of the most moving accounts," [Paul] Auster notes in his introduction, "of a man trying to come to grips with modern death--that is to say, death without God, death without hope of salvation--and it reveals the secret meaning of Mallarme's entire aesthetic: the elevation of art to the stature of religion."--North Point PressDonated by Prabu Vasan
