In the final days of World War II, a band of Jewish partisans makes its way from Russia to Italy, moving toward the ultimate goal of Palestine. Based on a true story, the novel chronicles their adventures as they wage a personal war of revenge against the Nazis: blowing up trains, rescuing the last victims of concentration camps, scoring victories in the face of unspeakable devastation. Primo Levi captures the landscape and the people of Eastern Europe in vivid detail, depicting as well the terrible bleakness of war-ridden Europe. But finally, what he gives us is a tribute to the strength and ingenuity of the human spirit

If this is a man by Primo Levi( Book )

317 editions published between 1947 and 2020 in 6 languages and held by 1,357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1943, Primo Levi, a 25-year-old chemist and "Italian citizen of Jewish race," was arrested by Italian fascists and deported from his native Turin to Auschwitz. Of the 650 Italian Jews in his shipment, Levi was one of only twenty who left the camps alive. The average life expectancy of a new entrant was three months. This is Levi's classic account of his ten months in the German death camp, a harrowing story of systematic cruelty and miraculous endurance. Remarkable for its simplicity, restraint, compassion, and even wit, Survival in Auschwitz remains a lasting testament to the indestructibility of the human spirit. -- Publisher description

The periodic table by Primo Levi( Book )

196 editions published between 1975 and 2017 in 15 languages and held by 990 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Periodic Table is largely a memoir of the years before and after Primo Levi's transportation from his native Italy to Auschwitz as an anti-Facist partisan and a Jew. It recounts, in clear, precise, unfailingly beautiful prose, the story of the Piedmontese Jewish community from which Levi came, of his years as a student and young chemist at the inception of the Second World War, and of his investigations into the nature of the material world. As such, it provides crucial links and backgrounds, both personal and intellectual, in the tremendous project of remembrance that is Levi's gift to posterity. But far from being a prologue to his experience of the Holocaust, Levi's masterpiece represents his most impassioned response to the events that engulfed him. The Periodic Table celebrates the pleasures of love and friendship and the search for meaning, and stands as a monument to those things in us that are capable of resisting and enduring in the face of tyranny. -- Provided by publisher
Auschwitz report by Primo Levi( Book )

14 editions published between 2006 and 2015 in English and held by 893 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"While awaiting return home in a Russian-administered holding camp in Katowice, Poland, in 1945, Primo Levi, along with his friend, the doctor Leonardo De Benedetti, was asked to provide a report on living conditions in Auschwitz for the Russian authorities. Published the following year, it was then forgotten and has until now remained unknown to a wider public. Here, it is published for the first time in the English language." "Dating from the weeks and months immediately after the war, Auschwitz Report represents a return to the very earliest phase of Holocaust testimony. It details the authors' deportation to Auschwitz, selection for work and extermination, everyday life in the camp, and the organization and working of the gas chambers. It constitutes Levi's first attempts to come to terms with events that would drive him to create some of the greatest works of twentieth-century literature and testimony."--Jacket

The drowned and the saved by Primo Levi( Book )

140 editions published between 1986 and 2019 in 9 languages and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shortly after completing THE DROWNED AND THE SAVED, Primo Levi committed suicide. The matter of his death was sudden, violent and unpremiditated, and there were some who argue that he killed himself because he was tormented by guilt - guilt that he had survived the horrors of Auschwitz while others, better than he, had gone to the wall. THE DROWNED AND THE SAVED is Levi's impassioned attempt to understand the 'rationale' behind the concentration camps, was completed shortly before his tragic death in 1987. THE DROWNED AND THE SAVED dispels the myth that Primo Levi forgave the Germans for what they did to his people. He didn't and couldn't forgive. He refused, however, to indulge in what he called 'the bestial vice of hatred' which is an entirely different matter. The voice that sounds in his writing is that of a reasonable warns and reminds us that the unimaginable can happen again. A would-be tyrant is waiting in the wings, with 'beautiful words' on his lips. The book is constantly impressing on us the need to learn from the past, to make sense of the senseless' PAUL BAILEY

Auschwitz testimonies, 1945-1986 by Primo Levi( Book )

11 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 288 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1945, soon after liberation, Soviet authorities in control of the Kattowitz (Katowice) camp in Poland asked Primo Levi and his fellow captive Leonardo De Benedetti to compile a detailed report on the sanitary conditions in Auschwitz. The result was an extraordinary testimony and one of the first accounts of the extermination camps ever written. The Report on the Monowitz Camp, published in a medical journal in 1946, marked the beginnings of Levi's lifelong work as writer, analyst and witness. In the subsequent four decades, Levi never ceased to recount his experiences in Auschwitz in a wide variety of texts, many of which are assembled together here for the first time, alongside other testimony from De Benedetti. From early research into the fate of their companions to the deposition written for Eichmann's trial, from the 'letter to the daughter of a fascist who wants to know the truth' to newspaper and magazine articles, Auschwitz Testimonies is a rich mosaic of memories and critical reflections of great historic and human value. Underpinned by his characteristically clear language, rigorous method and deep psychological insight, this collection of testimonies, reports and analyses reaffirms Primo Levi's position as one of the most important chroniclers of the Holocaust. It will find a wide readership, both among the many readers of Levi's work and among all those who wish to understand one of the greatest human tragedies of all time
Vizio di forma by Primo Levi( Book )
